[btw VAT is what the EU calls its sales tax] The LHC is on the border between France and Switzerland. In fact it crosses the border. The particles will race round the beamline at pretty much the speed of light, so will go round a few times. Crossing in and out of the EU each time round. Normally goods coming in and out of the EU have to be accounted for for VAT purposes on crossing the border. It is particularly awkward for the particles, because they increase in energy as they go round the loop. They can't go much faster (cos Einstein's speed limit is binding) so they put on mass instead. So let's hope the douaniers don't set up border posts to weigh them at each border crossing... |

VAT -- Value Added Taxation I guess you would be right, assuming that the particles increase in energy each rotation ... If I've lived this long, I've gotta be that old |

Well, at least they didn't put it on the Ukraine border, which would result in them losing 25% of their high energy particles. ;) I'm not the LHC Alex. Just a number cruncher like everyone else here. |
