My P133 racks up 13 cred/day, where my AMD X2 4400+ gets 650. Nevertheless, I'll still spend time on that P133 to get it working :D I've still got a P166 that wont accept an operating system.... all Linux does is give errors :'( BOINC@Hull . xfire . mySpace |

Contributing to the science of the project and the sense of working on something bigger than yourself in alliance with others, thats what boinc provides. Spending thousands to buld PC's to dominate the stats isnt the goal of BOINC or of the science projects. Building a new dual core dual proc for boinc is fun, rescueing an old server from a dumpster and rejuvenating it ...that is a hobby or borderline sickness, I havent figured that out yet.....but its fun. 8] Feisal! The contribution of your 1.6 is as important as some modern dual core. Being part of this is whats important. Whether its a Pentium Pro 100 or a quad dual core opteron...... .........fire up that BOINC and get crackin!!! \\------------------------------------------------------------------------- Perle Your point could not have been better said. I wish more people would realize that there is more to performance than quantitative statistics. Much to my dismay, the doggedly competitive attitude in this environment lives on. Why someone would want to cheat here is beyond my imagination, but maybe that horizon is not too far off?? Keep crunchin fellow LHC'ers!!!! |

The Explorer post that I'm a Junior Advisor for just got a new facility to meet at. Unlike the last 2 places, we don't have to share the space any more. So we can leave the computers setup all week. Although we will have to get approval from the higher-up's in Abbot before we can have BOINC running all week on our box's. |

I'd like to hear what people's estimated extra energy cost is in $$$ that is attibutable to their farms along with how many machines they have. Also, if you had , say, 10 machines that you took offline for a month what the apparent cost savings were.... While I'm here...I don't have a farm, just a garden. 1 Athlon 3k+ winxp 1 2.4 gig celeron winxp 1 500mhz celeron ME 1 166 pentium Win98 I'm working on rebuilding a pentium III and another 166 in storage... I've been running boinc since mid december. My electric bill has shot up about $50(US) in January. I have 1 pent 4 2.66 and 1 pent 4 3.00 both running @ 60% CPU. |

I'd like to hear what people's estimated extra energy cost is in $$$ that is attibutable to their farms along with how many machines they have. As I'm a student, its great for me this year as my electricity is a fixed cost in my rent :D But next year I'm using a meter, so bad for me :( 166 pentium Win98 What I'm doing (I have a 133,266,333, i.e. slow machines like yourself) is slowly removing my slowest computers and replacing them with dual processor machines. They use roughly the equivalent power but with more crunch ;) So if 10 machines cost $50, 5 dual machines would only cost $25 (for example) :D :D BOINC@Hull . xfire . mySpace |

Using a Watt/Hr meter, I estimate I'm using around $65 a month. But then I'm running nine computers 24/7. |

Using a Watt/Hr meter, I estimate I'm using around $65 a month. But then I'm running nine computers 24/7. I'm using a good ole KVM. Niffty little gadget that means I don't need more than one keyboard, monitor, mouse combination. |

Whats the cost per kWh? US =! UK :D seems like it would be hard to determine this since cost is set by individual power companies. My cost per kWh is $.11 which goes up exponentially when I go over the baseline amount. i.e. Baseline-$0.11 101-130% of baseline-$0.12 131-200% of baseline-$0.21 201-300% of baseline-$0.29 I haven't gone over the 300% mark yet but I'm thinking of making the kids put boinc on their comp to crunch for me when they aren't gaming. that'll probably push me up there. Glad ENRON's not feeding us power here in Cali anymore, I'd need a loan. |

I came acrossed a quad Itanium server today. CPU code is SL4VF I belive this is a 733mhz proc. Ok...I am well aware of the sinking " Itanic " situation Just as a speculation....what might its crunching ability be? I am assuming 03 swerver would work for the OS .......or do I finally have to learn Linux? |

A geek dream finally realised. I have trying to get one these 8 proc Xeon systems for over a year. But paying over $200 in frieght to have one shipped is not sensible. I was able to acquire one locally and it looks like another might be available next week. When it rains it pours. CPU type GenuineIntel x86 Family 6 Model 7 Stepping 3 550MHz 2mb L2 cache Number of CPUs 8 Operating System Microsoft Windows 2003 Enterprise Server Edition Memory 8191.32 MB Cache 976.56 KB Measured floating point speed 497.33 million ops/sec Measured integer speed 868.71 million ops/sec I also have that Itanic....now how to get it running. |

Using a Watt/Hr meter, I estimate I'm using around $65 a month. But then I'm running nine computers 24/7. I keep one of these around for BOIS settings but after running a 1->4 KVM into another 1->4 KVM I decided it was time for something else. Check into 'RealVNC'. It's easier than I thought it would be. And besides... we don't need no stinkin' monitor.. or case... or ... A geek dream finally realised. Thats a nice bit of kit! Where I live, nothing like that ever seems to materialise (I live amongst the unwashed masses it seems... no-one knows how to use ebay up here) - I would always have to pay some extortionate amount for delivery. I also had a power surge the other week... blew a hub and a 4 way plug splitter. Since then I've had to reinstall XP on my main machine, and lost all the other IP settings for the others. Only just now found enough time to get half the machines back up and running. It's a busy RL... BOINC@Hull . xfire . mySpace |

I am running 4 machines on a Belkin 4 way KVM. With the arrival of new machines, I want to try and work a KVM onto a KVM. So I can still use just a single monitor. Power bill for my house is about $100 a month. But that is for a family of 4 and my carpentry work / table saw / planer / sanders / air compressor. I am running 5 systems in the garage and 2 PC's in the house 24/7 . |
