Just saw on the BOINC message boards that there is a new reccommended version...

5.2.9

It is supposed to solve the connection failure problems, but I don'tknow if it actually does. Luckily I haven't run into that problem.

Well - If there's nothing else to do, you can always spend your time working your way through the various updates. A better way seems to be just to wait and make the change when actually required by the various projects (if ever) ...

That's what irritates the fire out of me with the BOINC developers..

Their product release cycle is horrendous. It's akin to AOL releasing 9.0.1, two days later 9.0.2, the next day 9.0.3, and after a month they've had 14 releases and are up to 9.1.7. NO ONE would have confidence in that software much less having to install a new AOL every time a "recommended" version is posted.

Why is the official "recommended" boinc client being updated so frequently? Where is the bug testing before releasing it into the wild? It seems completley unprofessional to have updates like that. TEST YER SOFTWARE THOROUGHLY before recommending an entire community of a few hundred thousand users to download it.. then again a few days later.. and again, and again.

There's a reason for development builds and there should be a decisive distinction between the development and production releases. Limewire has an excellent system for beta & public builds. They use an odd/even version numbering system..

/end rant

There used to be a 'proper' development cycle with alpha and beta testing before release. The problems started emerging when all sorts of people started climbing onto the Beta test site and running Beta software on live sites and then complaining about it.

Yes, we see releases every couple of days, and I agree it's not good. It is, however, better than the chaos that existed before.

For what it's worth it would be better to post this on the BOINC forums where some one in a position to act might take notice.

The new versions of BOINC are due to the massive influx of users over at SETI this brought up a whole hosts of problems within BOINC which no one knew exsisted as they only showed when the servers were overloaded. The team have worked hard to solve all the problems in the past week on a limited budget and staff

no one is forcing any users to update it isn't required if your BOINC client runs perfectly at the moment, people have choices, don't downlaod it, download it or quit BOINC never to be seen of again

MikeW has a good point and I should do that. :)

Halifax-lad:
That's why development should be done in cycles. Release a beta client, those interested can participate and provide feedback. Changes are made, another beta, more testing, until all known bugs have been removed. Wait for a period of time (say, a week) for unexpected problems. At that time if nothing bad shows up, promote the release to a "stable" version and release it to the masses. If problems are found (which are non-critical) release a new beta and resume the above process. Should a critical problem be found, release a new stable version as soon as possible.

I totally appreciate the efforts that go on behind the scenes in regard to product development, especially under the strain of "unusual" circumstances such as an overloaded server. After reviewing the changelog on the last few clients I can understand the network related updates per seti's problem. Some of the other updates could have waited for a more major version - hopefully they have been thoroughly tested.

I think some of these bugs might had slip throught the older beta testing, since they only appeared to people trying to attach for the first time to an overloaded server.

They need to release new versions fast cause they don't want to scare away new users coming from seti classic. If they update it fast enough, the newest users will grab the newest app and wont' have the problems. It is a recommended version because if you are downloading the app you should get that one. You don't /have/ to upgrade unless you have one of the problems it fixes.

exactly all the changes were for the new users to help them connect to the overloaded servers as BOINC got confused it wasn't a problem that could be tested for properly and showed up only due to classic closing

There's a lot of things that make me giggle, but punctuation (or the lack of it) is not one of them -- guess I'm out of "touch" ...
