Is there yet a date for LHC completing the project we are working on?
Will there always be a need for LHC crunchers?
(for next 5 years? 10 years?)

There is supposed to be an end in 2006 for this part of LHC@Home. They did mention some background work on a new application to be fielded to take the place of sixtrack. I did not put down in notes what that follow on work was.

Now it is obvious I should have done so. Sigh ...

But, it is the type of follow on work that I suggested would be a "natural" for LHC@Home.

I would be suprised if CERN lets LHC@Home die. The indications from the start of the program is that the speed and quality of the return for the infrastructure cost is impressive. In other words, I doubt they will let this "free" money lay on the floor.

LHC@Home is supporting the construction of the Large Hadron Collider, due for completion in 2007. The project will last at least until then. There will be a continuing requirement for beam studies after that, so expect to see the project run for some considerable time yet.

They did mention some background work on a new application to be fielded to take the place of sixtrack.

The application they're looking at is Geant 4, a tool for simulating the pasage of particles through matter.

Cool, so there will always be something going on.

To the futur:
Can you info a bit about the wiki you speak of?
- main idea is so that pages can be edited and updated, cool.
I followed your wiki link to find your update, but found nothing.
- I guess because wiki is so new, most wiki pages I find are still mostly about explaining wiki and conduct expectations.

The Wiki *I* speak of is the one I work on every day. Click on the link above my signature.

As it says at the top of the first page, the editors list is limited. I have barely enough time to put in material and correct *MY* mistakes. I also have little desire for someone to take out his/her frustration on the content of the Wiki ...

The note I added, off first page, goto the project listing then to LHC@Home.

Catalog of BOINC Powered Projects
LHC@Home

should be the second paragraph.

I will admit the content is weaker than I would like IN ALL PLACES ... but, what I have is better than nothing at all ...

And, my goal is to explain BOINC in simple language so anyone can understand it. Also to provide a comprehensive reference, like the listing of error messages ... the Owner's Manuals, etc ....

==== Edit

I am not sure I am understanding you. I will take all the time we need though. My goal is explaining BOINC ... I just like to write it down once so anyone can learn what I did ...

Oh, and with the "Google" search, the Wiki is MUCH better as far as letting you find what you are looking for. For all of that ... heck, click on the links and just read, not only might you learn something, but, you may be able to find an error, or tell me where we did not explain things well ...

Again, we work hard to add material, prune out bad/obsolete, link to other Wikis (just started being real aggressive about that) and so on ...

Up, out of work
31418 workunits in progress
40 concurrent connections

28.10.2005 13:34 UTC
The current group of studies is coming to an end. Small bunches of workunits will be created as we finish off the studies. There will probably be a pause while the results are studied.
