I was going to wait a while until LHC got sorted and upgraded the server side to support version 5 clients. However seeing as how LHC is currently out of work anyway, and the fact that I've reached the nice round milestone of 10k credits, I figured I'd make the switch.

No problems so far. SETI, Einstein and Predictor working fine. I hope LHC will soon follow suit. :)

I switched a while ago as I am one of the BOINC Alpha testers.

I believe that 5.2.x is going to be the recommended version within a day or two.

You made my mind. I did the switch to 5.2.1 too. So far no problem (Rosetta/Einstein/SETI). I'll post follow up in couple days.

It seems inevitable - so I've moved one machine to 5.2.1, and we'll see. I can always drop back to 4.45 if LHC comes up with more work.

I read over on the LHC-Alpha boards that that had seemingly been upgraded (ie. they aren't getting the "you have version 5, you need version 4" type message) but thats there's no work available. Hopefully LHC will get upgraded soon :)

I'm lost with regards to this topic, again.

Boinc used to be the only one I could choose the version of,
the others, lhc / seti / ..., did it on their own.

I have Boinc 4.45, the only version I see as recommended.
All project site message boards, lhc / seti / ..., have this topic: version choosing.

what's the poop?

V5.2.x is probably going to be the next release. It's still under development. The lastest test versions can be found at
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/ or
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php?dev=1
LHC has not yet updated it's servers to work with V5, but most of the other projects have.

Questions? Answers are in the BOINC Wiki.

Thank you

And
I don't need to update the LHC software, correct?
That will be done automatically, correct?

I only have to update the Boinc software myself, correct?

Correct.
But be aware that you will not get work from LHC. Until it updates its servers, you will get an error message from LHC that you need V4 to get new work.

LHC requires Boinc V4.x and will not supply new work to Boinc V5.x.x until it updates its servers.

The server side software is not "locked" to a specific version, or sets of versions of client side software.

The idea is to keep them as independent as possible. There have been historical cases where there was such a change in the protocols that the had to restrict versions. Hence the messages you are seeing discussed.

When the server side is updated/patched, work from LHC@Home can be sent to a version 5.2.x client. Until that time, the 5.2.x people will not get work.

Since there is no work at the moment, I am not sure that this is much of a deal.

The client has to be manually updated. This was to prevent the automation of virus propagation.

The science applications will automatically select the right version needed, downloading it as needed.

I have no problems with 5.2.1(Rosetta, SETI, Einstein) so far.
The only problem with LCH, LCH server did not suply work to 5.x.x, as Aurora Borealis explained.

I upgraded to 5.2.1 about a week or so ago (close to when it came out). The only issues I've noticed:

- Have to connect to predictor@home on 4.45, and then upgrade. They also don't have an option to store a password, so requiring an acct key to connect, the new Acct Manager won't work.

Once done, Predictor runs fine and all my returned results have validated without incident.

- The graphics in Einstein@home don't display now when clicking on "display graphics" in the WU tab.

Otherwise, it seems all is well, and climate predictor was able to sign up with the wizzard. Only problem there is that there project is down, and the first trickle can't report. From some people's indication 5.x might address a problem over there, where some people got a sulpher WU, and then 4.45 proceeded to pull 5 slab WUs after, at which they were like "there's no way my computer can complete all these in deadline, what do I do?" problem...

You make it sound as though your 5.2.1 client can talk to LHC?! Mine can't. What gives?

Oh, it doesn't (albeit I wouldn't consider this so much an issue with 5.2.1 itself, so much as a project doesn't yet support sorta thing...) I ended up disconnecting LHC for the time. Course LHC was out of work then, so it didn't matter at the time. It would now, that LHC has work. However, that said, with

- 1 CPDN sulpher WU
- 3 Rosseta WUs
- 1 Einstein WU
- 1 SETI WU
- 15 Predictor WUs

queued up currently, my computer has enough to keep it busy until LHC is ready to upgrade to 5.2.x... The comp at school can pull WUs for both LHC and Predictor, as it has 4.43 on Slackware Linux... Course if someone wants to do LHC WUs now, one does need a 4.x client still.

In any case it's not been a real rush for me to go 5.x yet.. afaik LHC, CPDN, and P@H all work with 4.x clients and the latter two of the three are up to server versopm 5.x now (and CPDN & P@H have suffered 5.x server-related transition pains). What I'd like to know is if there any projects which don't work with 4.x anymore? If no, the 4.x client still holds more value as all projects would work with it... :)

That's my 2ยข

And now there's lots of WU's from LHC, so I'll stick to my 4.72!
