LHC@home

I have crunched my way thru a couple of six-packs worth of the 'standard' units with names like wjun3a and wjun4a, but recently got some that started with w5_lhc_coll - tried a search on the message boards, but didn't see them mentioned anywhere... They seem to crunch on the same old sixtrack 4.67 application?

All WUs currently use Sixtrack 4.67. The names assigned to each WU reflect the study in progress, and variations of parameters supplied to the application. Unless you're actually part of the LHC commissioning team or LHC@Home the names won't mean very much.

Sometimes it's possible to identify the amplitude parameter in the name. Large amplitudes tend to go unstable and finish early. Small ones don't and tend to run the full number of turns.

Beyond that there's not much to say.

collision trip measurements? looking for safety-limits for the big machine? released energylevels during collisions??

if they don't go unstable they seem to run about twice as long as the previous batch we had.

Hmmmm, I hadn't noticed that, but you're right. Of the five I saw, two died a quick and painless death in less than a minute, one went about 1/2 hour and the other two went for 10 to 10.5 hours. About double what most LHC units run.
