LHC@home

Just updated to the NOT-FOR-PUBLIC-USE BOINC 5.1.1 client. (yes, this means you. Don't download it. It's buggy, it'll eat all your credits. Stick with 4.4.x!)

Anyhoo, LHC schedulers are giving me:

Message from server: Need major version 4 of the BOINC core client. You have 5.

So I'm guessing that when LHC comes back with new work, I won't be crunching for them any longer on my main box. Anyone have any idea when this situation will be remedied? Project Devs?

I like LHC... They have over 75% of my total resource shares. This is a bit of a show stopper, though.

you could take the most recent source code and compile it with a lower version number. I THINK that will work. of course, i'm utterly clueless when it comes to that stuff. so listening to me would be like following the blind.

dev version != broken version. It just means 'use at your own risk'. Upon further review, there is ample and explicit Wiki documentation on the problem. If I had just read the Wiki before I upgraded my BOINC client....

Jim's got a good point, but it's too labor intensive for a problem that will have to sort itself out in the near future anyway.

I just didn't expect to get locked out of the science applications with a core client upgrade. Like I've said, it isn't a huge calamity or anything. I'm just a) curious if anyone knows when LHC will support 5.x clients, and b) letting the LHC group know that there are those of us out here who would like to see LHC support 5.x.

You can un install and install a lower number client. For me, the 4.45 works well on windows and 4.43 or 4.72 works well on OS-X.

These kinds of problems is why I always keep the installers for all of the versions I install. :) It allows me to go back ...

I do not care enough about the issue I'm having to fix it. If I backrev, then I'll have to upgrade again. My main question still hasn't been answered (i.e. When will LHC support 5.x clients?). If LHC is going to upgrade their code, then I'm just subjecting myself to version thrash.

I could backrev. Paul's right. It's easy. It's just not a big deal to me. If I get a response back that says we won't support 5.x clients till next year, then I may consider backrevving. But frankly, as the project's out of work for a bit now, it's even less of a deal.

I am alpha testing 5.1.3, especially on the attach wizard, yet not being able to download from projects like LHC and all the switching between 4.72 and 5.1.3 on one computer made me do something else: I saved the boinc manager of 5.1.3, uninstalled 5.1.3, reinstalled 4.72 and put the manager back.

So I run 4.72 Boinc with 5.1.3 Manager. Works great. I can still test, and run all my fave projects. ;)

Some of us are volunteer Alpha testers, and we have agreed to test the newest versions before they are released to the rest of the users. That said, there are a fair number of bug fixes that are 5.x. However, the current testing is mostly aimed at the manager and not the daemon.

I regretfully have to state that I will be slowly moving my machines to 5.1.x over the next couple of weeks, and will then not be able to crunch for projects that have not upgraded their servers.

On which note I have to say, that although 4.72 and BM 5.1.3 work fine together, I have run into the snag that I cannot attach to projects anymore.

"the URL used is not a Boinc project"... ;)

Oh well, testing goes on. I'll try the 5.1.1 boinc.exe with the 5.1.3 BM next. See what that says.

I think the piece of the puzzle of when lies with this post http://lhcathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=1672...may be a long while due to the 0 problem on windows os's :( They must solve this 1st

I did hear that you can use the 4.72 boinc.exe but use the 5.1.x boinc manager and that overcomes the problems with not being able to connect to LHC, but this is unconfirmed by me at this stage.

Will it be announced on the LHC front page when you guys decide to upgrade your Boinc server to 5.x? I hope so. I have one machine that I've upgraded to client 5.x. Because of the upgrade I am no longer able to crunch for LHC on it. :( I have it suspended until you decide to upgrade.

I understand and respect your decision to not upgrade right now. Just being curious.

I just let mine run. They automatically defer for 24 hours after each attempt so I'm not hitting the servers too hard. When the upgrade happens my computers will pick up on in without any trouble.

I was doing this too, for a while, but then I thought that it was really messing up my LTDs. As much as I like LHC, I didn't think it should run 3 months straight just to get caught up on LTD's.

I hope either of you see this, as I just wanted to point out (In case you weren't already aware), that nearly all other major BOINC projects are now capable of running 5.x.x Predictor is upgrading their server software in approximately 7 days. Is there any timeframe for LHC@Home to be upgraded?
