The LHC@Home team have installed a deadline optimiser. It looks at the available computing capacity and estimates an optimum deadline that will return all results in the fastest time. This should reduce the completion time of each study as it is carried out.

Deadlines have been shortening since this was done - initially to eight days, and now to less than five. For participants with short caches this isn't a problem - most units will turn round in the time. For user who like to have a large cache LHC will not now deliver units.

IMHO a five day deadline is too short. Units will get missed for all sorts of reasons. It'll also drive some users away who can't turn round units in such a tight timetable. Einstein used to have seven day day deadlines and found it necessary to move to fourteen. However, it's the project team driving this so we have to adjust or leave.

It is indeed Groom Lake airbase in area 51. I'll post something more challenging next time!
