<blockquote>
Imho the way the file deleter works is strange - why is there a deadline if this deadline isn't obligatory for all - including server side!

</blockquote>

The "deadline" exists to allow BOINC to issue an appropriate number of results, and track their return. It isn't a cut-off point beyond which results won't be accepted. It is merely the point at which BOINC can re-issue results. Without a "deadline" BOINC would either have to issue more units to ensure a quorum, or it would wait endlessly for results to be returned from machines that aren't going to do so.

The problem with the file_deleter was that it wasn't honouring the deadline, so once a quorum was reached it was deleting the files, and subsequently returned results would not get credit. The correct behaviour would be to wait until all issued results had been returned, or had passed the deadline. It's not clear whether the 4th August update fixed this.

That´s exactly what I tried to say - sorry for being misunderstandable ;-)

And another WU with ever pending credit 658138: 3 were granted, one is pending since weeks. Could someone fix it, before the unit is dropped or hanging forever?

Thanks

I've had one hanging since July. Can it either be granted credit or killed as appropriate at this point?

Still have Pending Credit going back to July 2005 as have many other crunchers.

Hopefully when Qeen Mary University take over, they will sort this out.

The problem with the file_deleter was that it wasn't honouring the deadline, so once a quorum was reached it was deleting the files, and subsequently returned results would not get credit. We have all accepted this explanation for a long time, and I have done my share of passing it on. I now think this is not the problem - or at least not the only problem behind the ever pending results.

Even when the redults are still around, the last in can sometimes get ignored for weeks. Eventually the deleter will delete them, but the bigger issue, in my opinion, is that for some reason the fifth reult back sometimes does not trigger whatever task / process is supposed to validate it.

This result is a case in point. It was returned more than two and a half days before the deadline, yet also more than three and a half days after the other four results. It is now 12 days after the deadline, 14days after the result was reported, the results are still there, so it is not fair to blame the deleter any more: but long after other work reported at the same time has been validated (or invalidated) this one is skipped over.

The deleter may have caused similar problems in the past, or it may not. Clearly it is inncoent this time, yet the result is still stuck in pending due to some other unidentified reason. It may be that all the deleter has done is to hide the real problem. That in itself is a bug, of course - but the point I am making is that fixing that bug may not make the symptoms go away.

I am not worried either way by an odd 25 cobblestones, it is minor irritant, but it does need to be on the longer term 'to do' list. I respect that there will be other, more pressing, issues for the attention of the incoming admins when they get here. But when someone does look at this, I am suggesting you need to look further than just the deleter. Why is result four accepted but the code never comes back for result 5? Curious.

My suggestion for when this is looked at, is that all pending results where the rest of the wu no longer exists should get half the claimed credit and be deleted from the db about a week later after users can see what they got. On this project we accept half credit for the results that fail our rather fussy validator, and it seems reasonable to me to go for this compromise.

If not, can all results that have been pending for more than 60 days just be deleted -- they cause clutter.

Again: I am not rushing our incoming admist - there are things higher up the priority list, just making two suggestions ready for when the time does arrive.
