And the correction factor does its work based on the original (fpops) estimate from the developers, so the estimates that are proportional to some known input value (like LHC has) are no problem at all. The real problem is the projects where the developers have no real idea what the running time is going to be because the inputs are too complex (like Protein Predictor has).

After a month or two of the new versions being out in general hands, you should have a good idea how wrong the initial estimates are (take the average correction factor, and you won't be too far off from the % error in the original fpops estimate).

Yes, the sudden death problem was taken into account. This is precisely why the estimate is reduced slowly. If a completion time is less than 10% of the midified original estimate, then the estimate will move down even more slowly just so that a few fast returning results will not upset the estimate too much.

Well, I'm jealous - my old and slow machines are on RedHat 6.2, and I can't
find a working BOINC client :(

(I've compiled several, but the benchmarking always concludes that I have
zero, count 'em, ZERO processors installed. Sigh.)
