I have noticed that altough LHC@Home reached 8000 users, on boincstats.com we can see only 6,704, and this number is rising every day =). How can this be? Is it some XML statistics lag? Thanks. this game has no name |

That might explain it. We also have quite a few people who seem not to have activated their acccounts by going to the required homepage, but are still crunching. These people might not be exported. Some people at cern, for example, have no credit on this project, they only got accounts for testing purposes. Chrulle Research Assistant & Ex-LHC@home developer Niels Bohr Institute |

I think I read somewhere on the BOINCStats website that only users with credit get added to the database there, so even if they are being exported, they probably aren't showing up yet. Regards, Clint www.clintcollins.org - spouting off at the speed of site |

The 5 million+ inactive users in S@H were causing a problem with the size of the data transfers, so users with 0 credit stopped being exported. BOINC WIKI |

May be we should purge inactive users with zero credit after some time (ie 6 months), thus freeing some disk space and opening room for new sign-ups? I am sure this was discussed before, but i haven't seen it yet. this game has no name |

They'll probably do something like that - if 8000 is the quota and 6704 are already contributing credit, you'll need to give it up to two weeks for the "actual" number of "active" users to settle out. The reason behind it is the workunit expiration date- a user could have set up BOINC for LHC where only 1 WU gets crunched before expiration, thus 1 WU/2 Weeks. So two weeks after the new user signup cutoff date has gone by, LHC could use whatever method they'd like to allow more users to sign up. All in all it takes a month to fully feel the effects of allowing more users to sign up. Oh, and 1 user could bring more than 1 machine to the project (for example I think I have 8) so they are dealing with IIRC over 20,099 active hosts at present (per boincstats). They know their host-to-user ratio and plan accordingly. :) |
