As we drop with the available WU's:
Up, 6813 workunits to crunch

a shy question:
Will there be a longer outage after this run or will there be some new studies?

Any answer from LHC are apreciated (or wellcomed)...

Golly *I* hope so ... getting more and more convinced that I don't want to associate with SETI@Home...

And what really blows is that I really only want to do AstroPulse for UCB ... :(

@Paul

Is it because of the upload prob's or the other users comments against each other (some more profane than others)?

The upload problems, and all the other problems don't bother me in the least. As *I* expected they got worked on and fixed. So, no, those are mearly a little froth on my life's wake (a good time to pull out a sailor metaphor) ...

But, yes, the, um, uncontrolled angst, is getting me down. Couple that with practicality and with probability of success ... well ...

I mean, I like my stats as well as the next guy. But, I am here for thrill of participating in something I dreamed of as a child. I loved my physics classes ... chemistry some and biology not at all (strong sense of ikyness). I read for entertainment books on particle physics (I just finished about 5 on Einstein and the current state of string theory with 2 more to go - though I just also re-read most of a book on WW II - and yes, I read a lot ... it helps to be able to read 3,000 WPM {probably more now, but that is what I tested at and I don't use the skip words to be faster, I read them all}), subscribe to Discover magazine and Scientific American ...

But, I never lose sight of the fact that this is a hobby. For me it is a little more than that as it is a big part of keeping me in contact with reality and giving me something to live for ... and if you have never been suicidal, well, it is hard to explain how important that is ... even on my worst days I can still read the forums (fora?) though my ability to post is usually compromised on those days (which you can tell because the words have most of the right letters, but arranged with, um, more randomness than correctness ...

Anyway, I probably should not let it get me down ...

Paul, noone of us should, lose sight of this is a hobby, I mean! And you must never lose sight of the fact, that you mean so much for these projects and the societies around them!

Don't let insensitive comments from insensitive people let you down; just accept the fact that some people's biggest problem is to decide where to go on their hollidays, and this reflects in their lifeexperience and points of view! When some people get a rush out of the credit, they get in the different projects, then the withdrawal symptoms are really nasty and make them really bitchy! So, in times like the past days over at Seti, please just focus on the good you do for the projects, and how much you help us there.

If this can make you through the day, when you have the darkest hours, then your efforts are not in vain!

Fuzzy

The good news guys... is that I "KNOW" even when suicidal that it is not a viable solution ... too logical (Star Trek was one of the shows of my teens and I was compared to Spock a lot). But, when I am having a bad week ... well ... I can dispair ...

I may be coming out the other end though. I played Galactic Civilizations most of the day yesterday, read 2/3s of Hunt for Red October (also finished a history book on WW II Japanese navy, and 1/3 of a book on "Imponderables" - oh, I also took a break and ate pizza)

Anyway, with a lot of luck, I may see my new 1 TB disk drive (will only give me 700G when configured as RAID 5) tomorrow ... and will have that to distract me ...

With even more luck I will be able to do a little work today too ...

But, thanks for the support ... it *DOES* help ... as I have said before, this is how I can "get out of the house ..."

Is this a "single" disk or an "array"?

that is an array.... propably 4 x 250 GB... = n-1 disk capacity.... minus the 250 GB HDD has only 250.000.000 / 1048576 Bytes free...

or in other words.... roughly 700 GB available after formatting... :-)

Got it.....I have 4*160Gb in RAID5.

I just wondered about "drive".

Thanks.

It is an external "drive" but you are right, it is an array of 4 internal disks. I will make it one raid 5 to replace the small 300G RAID drive I have been using for about 5-6 years. Generally, I have one RAID array and then I use back up of real critical stuff to other spindles. So, the Array is the "gold" copy, but I have other copies ...

Like my music library, I have ~16,000 tracks in ~60GB. The actual running master is on a separate drive on the PowerMac in iTunes. I usually keep two other copies ... one on a spindle and one on the RAID array ... I also have CDs if worst comes to worse ... I can reload the CDs in about 2 days ... annoying, but not hard.

I have financial records in quicken going back to about 1980 as another example. Two weeks ago I did a reconcile to make all my statements and the database match ... the good news is I came out about $15K "richer" ...

The drive is in Okland when I looked earlier ... POSSIBLE to get it tomorrow ... but more likely monday ... lots of things to do ... I have to move some computers, try to install optimized client (and make sure I document what I do for the Wiki - which makes it take 5 times as long ... ah well ... all this and I don't get paid ...

@PB,

Taking the day off and playing more games ...

RAID-5 is the bomb! Have 3x120GB - Seagate 7200.7s & Promise 4060SX w/ 64MB ECC. Use mine like Paul does - music library & backup data is located there. Any small business or enthusiast who isn't using RAID 1+0 or 5 (with a hardware XOR controller) needs to pick one up now! :)

My old system, which has a fair amount of room was 4 drives and an Adaptec 2400a card for RAID 5 giving me about 300G of RAID. I wanted to make the Apple the core but could not get visibility out of the add on drives. But, I just found a tool that lets me set priveleges right so I can mount the external drives on a FireWire 800 channel ...

So, I will add that array and move all my old stuff over, ADD the music library and a few other things I have scattered around on internal mounted drives ... then I will have it all back under one "roof". Once that is done, I will take the other external drives and use them as back ups to the RAID array (am I paranoid enough is the question).

I was thinking to get the 1.6 TB drive but it was a little over double the cost and so I decided against it ... as it is, I think I will have room for at least a year or two ... and I will make an effort to thin out the stuff I am saving. I have some database schema information as Oracle exports and I don't think I am ever going to go back to work ... so ... I may as well just bite the bullet and eliminate most of them ... same thing with some of the other things I have ...

Don't "eliminate" the files, write them to CD or DVD.

I have like 9 different copies of an Oracle database ... I don't think I need quite that many ... and yes, I do plan to save some to DVD ... I am doing the copies of my RAID-5 drive now ... biggest part yet to come... 128G of music ...

I tend to be a pack rat ... so, I have stuff that is real ancient ...

And no, you can't have the old RAID array ... going to my brother Tom who is still working in IT as a project manager ...

Too late ... already got one ... debating on getting a second one and doing a mirror ... though I saw a small collection of BACH's music ... at $10 a CD roughly it is only a grand ... if I did the math right ...
