There's a lot of detail here....

Firstly, which version of BOINC are you running?

You want BOINC as a service? Uninstall, then re-install using the service option. Once done, use the control panel to look at the services, and check the properties for the BOINC service. If you're having trouble getting BOINC started check the 'System Account' button. To see the screen saver ensure that the service is allowed to interact witrh the desk top.

If you're doing a standard install then BOINC doesn't run as a service - you have to start the BOINC manager to run it, in which case you shouldn't have trouble with the screen saver.

Post feedback, and we'll see what's next.

The Wiki has an install guide with pictures for Windows ... if you are running OS-X or Linux, I am not there yet ...
