located at http://orbit.psi.edu/ June 16, 2005 After less than one day, more than 100 user accounts created! Also still having problems with slashes in urls, we are working on that. As a reminder, we don't have any BOINC application yet, and the scheduler is not running, so the BOINC client will bounce off the orbit@home website without much work to do for now. Update: now the scheduler is running, the BOINC client should be able to connect, ask for work, and then disconnect because there is no work available. The client can also complain for "platform 'x-y-z' not found": this is because there is not an application available yet. June 15, 2005 orbit@home website (re)-started! After a first test website yesterday, we decided to go directly with the BOINC website. This allows a uniform users management, and makes many other tasks a lot easier. User accounts can be created now, and we will disable it as soon as we will reach a user base of at least one thousand users, sufficient for the alpha testing phase. At this moment, the application is not yet ready for alpha testing. We will announce here the development news and the beginning of the testing phase.

June 17, 2005 Two days and more than 400 users. Orbit@home is becoming now a real community, with people interested in Distributed Computing, Astronomy and Asterodis. Now that all the server problems seem to be fixed, we will enhance the website in gereral, adding a description of this project and also introducing the users to the Science related to Minor Planets in the Solar System. Everybody is invited to contribute, sending or posting to the forum possible orbit@home logos, graphics, related websites and everything can help building the orbit@home image and identity.

You are right, this is unusual. Normally a project starts with a website with at least a description of the project, then get the application, and finally bring BOINC in. Here they are starting with getting BOINC volunteers, then are going to get a description of the project on the website, and finally get the application. Should be interesting!

July 5, 2005 Orbit@home status update: we didn't manage to fix the few website problems still around, and we didn't write the intro page yet. The main reason for this is that we're using all of our very limited resources to try to get orbit@home funded. This first funding wave will end on July 22. After that, a preliminary application and some work units should be available shortly. The subscription phase ended one week after the orbit@home website launch, and for the alpha phase we can count on 1036 users and about 1400 computers, with about [55% Intel, 43% AMD, 2% PPC], [92% Windows, 6% Linux, 2% Darwin] and [78% 1-CPU, 20% 2-CPUs, 2% 4-CPUs or more].

The project sounds absolutely ludicrous. Why would anyone want do a project about NEO colliding with Earth? Thats sounds crazy but then again i'll probably do it. Going to sign up for it has soon has they open up the account creation.

July 28, 2005 Orbit@home news Today we updated the BOINC code (and database tables) used by orbit@home to the latest development version available. Please report any problem. We are working on a preliminary client, to gain more experience with the BOINC system while still developing a more complete scientific application. The orbit@home team is also starting several scientific collaborations in order to use this distributed computing system to study other celestial mechanics problems. The work-units relative to these projects will be handled at the lowest possible priority, while the Near Earth Objects computations will always be handled with normal to high priority.

I am glad they will also be doing other orbital mechanics problems at a lower priority. Whatever helps astronomy...

August 29, 2005 Orbit@Home Project Update: we are testing the scientific application, and adding the few more features needed in order to make it completely automatic. This first version of the scientific application will be able to determine the orbit of any asteroid, using only the astrometric observations. After completing our tests, we plan to generate work units and test it on orbit@home, hopefully within 2-3 weeks from now. At the same time, since the BOINC team has recently introduced a number of new features, we will sync the orbit@home code to the latest BOINC version and fix all the related problems. We plan to enable again account creation during the beta testing, probably in November 2005. Thank you for your interest in supporting orbit@home, we hope you will join us then." Will there be a Windows version available then? If so, will I be able to sign up in advance for that, either beta testing client or full application? regards Robert |
