Hi On 1 of my machines I run Windows XP MCE2005 I get exception handler errors it fails to connect to machine when the manager software is run. I have managed to get round the issue. I run the boinc.exe with boinc -allow_remote_gui_rpc -return_results_immediately Then connect to local machine name it does not always run when i state local host or loopback IP. It also confirms if want to se the graphics on the remote machine if click show graphics even thou it is local machine. I have also seen messages saying there is work but commited to other platforms |

Is your problem limited to connecting to LHC@Home or does it affect other projects as well? Suggestions: 1) Check your firewall if you have one, it could restrict boinc 4.2x & 4.3x clients from connecting to your host or to various projects. 2) Remember you're using development software. If you want things to generally work correctly 99% of the time, use 4.19 or 4.25. 3) If this isn't a LHC@Home specific problem, you should report your problem to Berkeley- LHC@Home does not develop the BOINC client software. ![]() |

This is another case of Windows Multi-Tasking being great at doing only one task. Windows Media Centre is not the same as Windows XP. There are numerous additions and changes required to support TVs and the remote devices, which is part of why the client doesn't display graphics locally, and why the -allow_remote_gui_rpc is required. This is less of a bug with BOINC than a quirk of Media Centre. >>there is work but commited to other platforms This generally means that the work available has already been committed to Linux, and is not available for Windows. I'm not sure how Media Centre reports itself to the BOINC server. It may be that Windows and Media Centre are different in BOINC eyes, in which case you'll have to wait for new units, or units that have been committed to other Media Centre machines. Personally, I wouldn't run anything on a Media Centre PC other than Music CDs... Gaspode the UnDressed http://www.littlevale.co.uk |

Hi All I thought I would add these extra comments. Firstly I work in the IT Industry and understand what MCE2005 is. I just happened to have it when I needed to reload one of my machines. I needed to evaluate it commercially. A great concept, a poor implementation. (Signs of things getting better thou.) Better digital TV support is a must. This issue is certainly putting me off and I wouls suspect a lot of others. This aside things I have noticed. 1 - MCE2005 reports as windows XP 2 - The switches used was the only way I could get the gui manager to connect to the boinc core cli program. 3 - This problem is the core client not the project. 4 - LHC is the only project where the graphics works ? and with an ATI graphics card. 5 - I was suprised that the manager did not connect on loopback or localhost but does on the pc name. 6 - It is not unreasonable expect people with MCE2005 to attempt to run boinc after all. A lot of people leave their tellys on 24hrs. The problem appears to be in the install The clients appear to install ok over the top of 4.25 and run, when I rebooted the system boinc failed to connect to the localhost. After running the boinc.exe with the switches I got it to work. Before this I had no problems with 4.25, I did try and downgrade but what ever the install did it now effects the 4.25 client. The error message about grphics showing locally is a warning it does work. I presume you could display another PC's WU graphic. as this client is intend for network administration. |

Hi Yes I should have posted this to berkeley sometimes I don't think they have their hearing aid on. I was rhoping somebody might shed some light on as to wether you need to manually configure the boinc.exe for this type of operation. I can live with the bugs. It seems happy. I have noted that the issues regarding the update button. But I have found I get response when clicked that appears same as before. (That might be a depper meaning thou to this issue.) |

I agree, but after twenty years of working with Windows & Microsoft I have learned not to pressurize Microsoft products until about version 5 ;-) (I, too, have a background in the IT industry) Gaspode the UnDressed http://www.littlevale.co.uk |

When downgrading, uninstall BOINC, the manually delete the installation folder. Files & settings will be left behind and you can inherit problems from another version. You must do this especially if you fall back to 4.19. I had problems running the 4.2x/4.3x clients, especially with LHC. Since 83% of my processing time is scheduled for LHC, I fell back to 4.19 and haven't had a days' trouble since. Boinc 4.2x/.3x generally updates the client screen once every 5 seconds. That may explain the 'lag time' you've noticed. AFAIK I thought there was a way to make it update more frequently.. at the expense of CPU cycles. :) Don't ask me how, I've avoided upgrading like the plague until they get those clients working better. I also have an ATI Graphics card (9800 Pro AGP, 128MB, OCed 400/375) and have never had a problem with 4.19 and LHC or CPDN's 3D screensavers. CPDN makes far more use of 3D graphics than any other project. It's interative, you can rotate the planet, view different layers of the atmosphere, apply/remove temperature or precipitation or pressure maps, and so on. Good luck. (Yes I work in the IT industry as well) ![]() |

Hi Your taking a risk > I agree, but after twenty years of working with Windows & Microsoft I have > learned not to pressurize Microsoft products until about version 5 ;-) It took Microsoft 6 attempts at DOS excluding the sub releases |
