I'm a bit puzzled here: If numerical differences are still to be resolved then presumably there should be a new client. The WUs I have seen today are still running 4.64. @Paul - I read some of your notes on the possible 'zero cpu' problem, but I thought you'd found a BOINC client problem. Was it a server side bug you found? Mike W Gaspode the UnDressed http://www.littlevale.co.uk |

He guys look at his joining date, I don't believe he (Jukka Klem) is a CERN-team-member. - Or did sombody from the LHC-team announced him? - So he can write what he want and you believe it!?! (Everybody can title his signature as he want!) greetz from littleBouncer From the 'new stock' from march 29. there was only 1 with 0 CPU-time (from over 40) |

Yes I am from CERN although a rather new member in the LHC@home team. I will bring some news especially about the application and physics side of the project. One of the more experienced LHC@home team members (Chrulle) will soon be back in action. Greetings, Jukka Klem |

@Jukka Klem WELLCOME aboard! It's fine to read your statements here. Many of us like to see any kind of news, some of us are member since last summer and --yes outside of pure crunching -- there is a high interest to keep in touch with the project. This means, it's very appreciated. Not the zero cpu thinggy, not the technical things are "our" big problems, mostly, the (sometimes) lack of information let us run in suffering mode. OK I can only put my voice.. so one more time WELLCOME aboard and have a successfully stage at cern And don't hesite to post! Friendly ric |

Was it a server side bug you > found? No, it is a client side bug. It has to do with the API connecting the BOINC Daemon to the Science Application. The fix is to not use checkpoint time to overwrite final time and to make sure that all of the messages get read in proper order. According to Dr. Anderson compiling a new Science Application or a New BOINC Daemon will cure the problem ... I am not sure that is true, but, this is not my area or expertise so I have to believe that it is true. Since this problem mostly affected LHC@Home (and I believe the The Lattice Project also ... now in open Alpha {or is it beta?}). I looked at the code checked in and the change makes sense and is likely to have cured two problems that were coming out as one effect. The biggest impact will be for those Work Units that were able to complete before a checkpoint and for those that do not have a checkpoint in them at all. It is also possible that LHC@Home had additional issues in their code for doing checkpointing as there is a long round-robin to perform this task. They are however doing tests on increasing the accuracy of the application, and I suspect that we are the "Control" to process some work which they can then use again to check the new builds against. Or, we may be "sweeping-up" some work that did not get issued previously ... then again ... maybe we are getting pulled this way or that! :) |

>>(and I believe the The Lattice Project also ... now in open Alpha {or is it beta?}). It's in closed Alpha still. We'll all have to wait for this one... Mike W Gaspode the UnDressed http://www.littlevale.co.uk |

We'll all have to wait for this one... more like closed pre-pre-pre-pre-alpha sure. you would have to be crazy like me to want it. they have 3 day wu's that don't check point yet. shutting down the machine or boinc is really bad. then again if your one of those people that are afraind of leaving the app in memory you wouldnt even be able to pause the thing. |

The below is great news! We all know and understand science is a slow and uneven process, we would just like weekly news. I have copied and pasted the below in some other BOINC forums. My only suggestion is that it be posted in the front page news section of the LHC web site instead of the forums. Ed Griffith "The recent work units have been submitted for testing the numerical differencies from different platforms (hopefully there are none left) and zero credit problem. The LHC@home project has recently lacked manpower. A new person will start working for the project in the next few days and we hope to get results much faster. The scientists will have many more jobs to run on LHC@home and we hope that this will happen in a very near future. Jukka Klem CERN" |

In Today's News, IBM smashed records in a data challenge. http://www.lightreading.com/document.asp?site=lightreading&doc_id=71108 "...shattered performance records during a data challenge test by CERN by reading and writing data to disk at rates in excess of 1GB/second for a total I/O of over 1 petabyte (1 million gigabytes) in a 13-day period. ..." News realease: http://www.marketwire.com/mw/release_html_b1?release_id=83659 I'm not the LHC Alex. Just a number cruncher like everyone else here. |

> Or because we got 'soooooooo much work' from here! > > lol;-) > Let me do the math......... 4 weeks.......0 Wu's....... 0.00 credit 4 weeks X 0 wu/week X 0.00 credit/wu=0 Yup that might do it. |

> exactly! > (there were a few at about 10:30 - 11:00 UTC today...) > dag nabbit. (translates-dog gonnit, or damn) give us Dial uppers a break. LHC crew:"the forum people are complaining again." LHC admin: "Ok, Let's make the forum people happy. Let's break free 6 Wu's, that should make them happy." LHC crew: "Sounds good boss." LOL My Uncle dies and I'm not here for a couple hours, they release work, I try to get a little sleep, they release work. Hmmm, are they watching me??? (looking out window). |
