For notebooks: look that Fans are free from bunch of dust(german:Staubknäuel). If not; you risk a backlog of heat.

Had an unexpected outage on my Notebook (Windoooze bluescreen *verry sad*) after 4 month non-stop-crunching.

With Einstein WU's i'm running 55C or more, SETI is 48C, LHC is about 52C. As for the notebook, have you got any space under it for airflow? Could lay down a couple pencils and set your notebook on top of that.

There is a german word and it's called "staubsaugen" (hoovering)

I like the people having money for fast crunchers but no money left for a good hoovering unit...
With the Ohrengrübler you can realy take the all the Dreck out.

must be an NT based host.
If you ran windows, you would write 4 hours or minutes nonstop

Why can't the notebook be placed outside? It should be cold enough now (-2 degrees C)!

What is that a Lil diagram?

(LOL diagram?)

Last summer I always knew when BOINC was crunching LHC. The processor fan always got to maximum speed :-P
Meanwhile I got a new copper cooler and hope in the summer the fans don't go to maximum speed :-)

offcorse I did, but there was a " sacre bunch of dust " (under the notebook); for that the fan couldn't get enough air ->> backlog of heat.
and as RIC suggest: I forgot "hoovering", I did only on the top(keybord):-(
and RIC: yes it is Windows XP Home and 4 months; not days or hours!

Had lost some unreported WU's.
I could start the Boincmanager, but the hosts were no longer allocated on projects, for that it was dl new WU's , even there were enough.

The first LHC - WU then crunched was a " 0 CPU time WU ", but the box crunched the "normal" 50 min. I hope that was an exept and has nothing to do with the outage.

other projects work fine just now after restart.
[EDIT] And I got a new host(on each project I join) at my computerlist, at new "merge" and beginn with 0 , offcorse I do not loose the total, but the RAC drops near 0 for this puter.[/EDIT]

THX for any replies and comments

It wasn't the backlog of heat what produced that unexpected outage on my Notebook.

The HD crashed and left 48 bad sectors. Semms : I have to change this HD, Oh ...

Meanwhile I crunch with/from an external HD, I installed the Boincmanager there and it is running from there.

This may be a trivial question, but how can you take temperature readings from notebooks?

To aid in power management most notebooks have temperature sensors that the system uses to control the cooling fans. Slower fans means less power consumption, and longer battery life.

They often have a software utility that reports the readings from the sensors - easy!

I have a Compaq N620c, and AFAIK there is no such utility bundled with it. However I found this freeware utility called SpeedFan. I'm going to give it a try.

i have litterally reheated a pizza after leving it under the laptop.
it wasnt like melted or anything. it was about the equivelent of one slice for about 15 seconds in the microwave. I now have this tray thing that goes on the bottom of the box and it has two large fans on it that pull the heat out of the boxi got my temps to drop bout 10 C
