What should the testers do during the switchover? Do we need to detach and attach to some other URL?

I think there's going to be a need for switch-over instructions for devs. :-)

They're going to have to plan this switch over quite cleverly. I think the idea is to just shut down the existing lhc site and change the url of this one, but there are implications that need to be considered.

The following will conflict between the beta site and this one:
.- Hosts attached since the last snapshot will have host id's that correspond to our hosts attached here.
.- Messages posted in the fora since last snapshot will have message id's corresponding to our messages.
.- User's preferences (and CPID's) will revert to those of this site.
.- New user id's created on this site will conflict with user id's that joined the beta site.

There's probably more, but I think you get the idea.

Being the minority affected, it may be less painful to take the beta site offline, update this alpha site with another beta snapshot and appply any v4 server updates as required. Being alpha testers, I don't think we'd mind that much if we lost what was done on this site.

Just a thought.

The server switch has been done and the new DNS names are slowly propagating around the net.

There shouldn't be any other problems with the database except that all messages, preference changes and such things issued since 26.1.2005 to the old server will be lost. That is the day we made database snapshot of the old server and updated the database to be compatible with the new BOINC server code.

On the old server the news said:

"26.1.2005 19:18 UTC
Installing new server. Due to changes in database schema, all changes to the database on this server will not be transferred to the new server, starting from 14:00 UTC today. This means that, for example, forum posts and changes in preferences done since 14:00 will be lost."

We apoligise that the change took this long.
