from your status report:
"The most likely timescale for this shutdown will be from mid or late November, coming up again with the improved system in December or early 2005."

first of all i am not a user, i am a donator. you are using my cpu time.

i, in no way understand, you are closing down your project for so long.
you are promoting lhc@home, not as beta, but as a project ready for the world.
you made it possible for 6000 donators to donate while you do not have enough work for 4000 donators.

you go for 6000 donators, and then you go down.

it becomes a bit ironic, it seems like you think that cpu power on internet is something you can play around with.

i read on your homepage you get great and unexpected results. closing down for maybe 6 or 8 weeks might be a very strange solution.

i, as a donator, do not at all understand this at all.

i do congradulate you with the successfull results.

Bass4LHC

I dont quite see what youre getting at. The project quite clearly stated that it had a goal to run for at least 50 days which I guess means that they could quite easily have just said thanks and goodbye.

Thankfully this is not to happen. Yes there will be a pause whilst new hardware and software is implemented. I for one look forward to the return of a bigger and better LHCathome.

It's also worth mentioning that since this project is about tuning the design of a collider, the WUs will come in "fits and starts". They make some changes, run some WUs and then analyze the data that is returned. Repeat as required. Even after the new permanent servers are installed, I expect to see interruptions in workflow. It's just the nature of the project, as I understand it.

I agree. This project isn't quite like SETI where new work is (theoretically) all but garunteed. The number of paramaters LHC varies is finite, and the amount it varies them is also finite. Barring a change in the collider specifications (which they say they'll use this project to determine the impact of), there's only so many different ways of running it before everybody winds up crunching the same WU several times.

I fully agree on that one.

Nobody forces you to participate at the LHC@home project.

Having LHC run under the boinc infrastructure gives you the option to donate cpu time as you wish and spread your donation among different projects.

I think it's better to take the servers and upgrade them rather than having the old stuff run and remain stuck at 6000 donators.

I like the LHC project because it has a goal. Right now there's even an end forseable (sorry if i spelled that wrong). That would be when the LHC is done with hardware installation (i mean the actual collider hardware).

Maybe and that's something I hope for, the success of the LHC project (with certain downtimes due to the result processing), other divisions of the CERN Institute will come up with their own projects or wu's so there's virtually no downtime at all.

Well, my pc @ home is down too ( i delayed hardware upgrades until lhc pauses), so I'm patient and looking forward to what comes in the near future.

Sincerely,

Sysfried
