cool, 50 LHC Workunits downloaded, client was following the preemting rules and paused the less prioritied seti work.
==========

Same here Ric, about 60 WU's, 6 of them Tunescana WU's. Most went to 1 PC though, 1 Computer got 1 lone Tunescana, another 5 Regular & 1 Tunscana, the rest to another PC with 4 Tunscana's included ...

Just for clarity:

IMO = In My Opinion.

I know what 'IMO' means. So, let me clarify my point and question. Both SETI and Astropulse are scientific projects related to particular subjects of astronomy (though one could also argue that SETI is in some way a biology project, too.). Pirates@home, on the other hand, is a BOINC project that has absolutely no scientific merit--it is just a test of the BOINC system. So my question remains, how is "Astropulse" more scientific than "SETI"? I am not trying to anger anyone, I am just curious how (and why you believe) that one is more sicentific than the other.

>>I am just curious how (and why you believe) that one is more sicentific than >>the other.

Ok - Astropulse is searching for evidence of natural phenomena. These phenomena have already been observed, and AP is searching for more of them. This will aid our understanding of the universe, and ultimately ourselves. My estimate of success: good.

SETI is searching for extraterrestrial intelligence. We've never seen any sign that there is any. If there is, it's statistically unlikely that it's nearby. We're searching only a narrow part of the spectrum, based on some idea we have that that's a good place to look. Why? And why should another alien race share that opinion? Even if we find a signal, we won't know what it is (it could still be natural, just previously unobserved).

If we find a signal, and it is thought to be intelligent, what then? There is a school of thought that believes we shouldn't do anything for fear of advertising ourselves to some hostile race. Even if we reply, the chances are our answer won't arrive for decades, or maybe centuries. Even when it arrives, will it be understood for what it is?

In short, we're looking for a needle in a field full of haystacks, hampered only by the fact that we don't know what a needle is, nor a haystack, nor where the field is. When we find it we're going to use it to stitch together a signal balloon in the hope that that the aliens will spot it. Not that they, in turn, know what a signal balloon is, or even that they should be looking for it.

My estimate of success? Very very very close to zero.

And even after all that I still crunch SETI because I believe that there IS intelligent life out there and I don't have a better way to find that needle.

And all this, of course, remains only my opinion!

Happy crunching!

You make some interesting points, Mike, but "scientific" doesn't have anything to do with needles and haystacks or estimates of success very close to zero. Scientific has to do with science, as in scientific principles, apparatus, observations, method, classification, arrangement ... SETI@home can easily be convincily argued to follow proper scientific method and principles, so I can't agree that AstroPulse is any more or less scientific than SETI@home.

I'm guessing that you perceive greater value in the science being done in the AstroPulse project for the reasons you gave, but I submit that both projects are equally scientific.

Cheers,

trane

what's about the "science" of math? Mathematik

in both implementations (projects) math has to be used and is playing a central rule.

In our vocabulary, the word of "science" is often used

"It can be a science to get work.."

What exactly is the border, the line, defining is or is not sc.

Really open wide the circle of possible answers:
the project is done by human. Everytime when humans are comming together, the psychology (Psychologie)
is working, so basically the "science" of psychology is involved.
Directly or indirectly.

Conceding, it's an abstrack point of view.

>SETI is searching for extraterrestrial intelligence.

MikeW U will probaly hate me, in my eyes, we are not seeking 4 ET, not really. What we are doing, is analysing/evaluating a reduced set of radio signals.
no more no less. Please correct me, if my view is completely wrong ;-)

Nicely said Trane. I agree. Though I think Mike (also in a very nicely said post) was making two points. One about the likely success of the project (which you have addressed quite nicely). The other hints at the scientific quality of the two projects (i.e., Mike's comment about the narrow band of observation might suggest that SETI is not being done as well as it should/could be). I think that 'more scientific' might be appropriately applied regarding higher and lower quality of a project's approach. However, since Astropulse uses the same data as SETI, I am not sure that such an argument would apply.

Also, sorry to everyone for pulling us out on this tangent...wasn't my intention.

Oh well it makes the SETI stats keep climbing the charts.

Ah come on PoorBoy!

My computers are hungry for a few LHC bytes to eat and telling me the old style SETI meals just don't taste as good as they used to.

Well thanks PoorBoy.......I just picked up a couple "proeight's" after clicking my wired optical mouse at the server about 100 times.......it had to be you tossing some food to my AMD 3200 (64)

Yeah I know that you probably have no problem running them but you might as well just hand me a dozen to give your system a bit of a rest!

You can keep the Tunescana since you only have the one......and since I run old style SETI at the same time the Tunescana slows my daily totals down.

But at this rate it takes so long to fill this machine that I don't bother with the others right now........and I can't wait to run some Einstein too

(are you on the east coast?)
