This may be an old point but,

My xp does the following fine:

My win 98, Boinc 4.45 too, does not calculate finish dates properly. It downloads enough work for each project, in regards to my connect setting of every 0.1 days.
- some will not finish on time!

The finish time is estimated by the project. LHC allow a bit extra for variations in processor performance, etc.

Upgrade to BOINC 5.x.x which adjusts the estimates over time based on actual performance of your machine. This should give a better estimate once your machine has run a few units.
