Step 1. Put a black hole in a lab.

Step 2. Do some tests.

Step 3. See if results match expected. If not, then you\\\\\\\'ve discovered something new or at least discovered that your assumption may have been incorrect.

Of course that\'s assuming you can get multiple WUs from the server. I have a dual core, and two quad cores, but am lucky to get just one WU at a time. This maybe because of my refusal to downgrade BOINC though.

That\\\'s disappointing, but thanks.

Going forward without actual data form the LHC, how will LHC@home be benefiting CERN and particle physics in general?

LHC@home currently has the highest resource share on all my machines, but now knowing that we will not be crunching real data (I understand why) I am strongly tempted to put LHC@home at or near the bottom of my resources. I hope I\\\'m convinced otherwise.

Thanks again.

When, if ever, will LHC@home be crunching actual LHC data in WUs?

By the way, I use BOINC projects with my middle and high schools to get students interested in ongoing science beyond what\'s in their textbooks, labs, and state standards. Some of our students are very interested in the LHC and being able to crunch actual data is one way I hope to keep their interest beyond secondary education.

I haven't seen all of it, but from what I saw it seems the movie tries to apply quantum principles to Newtonian levels which does not work. I also saw some misleading religious stuff in it that has been proven wrong. The cartoon on the wave-particle nature of light was good though.

Arrgh. I had a long detailed post typed up, but when I clicked "Post reply" I had to log in and lost it. Oh well, here's a summary.

I'm a high school science teacher (physics, chemistry, earth science, etc.) and am planning a BOINC science project for my physics class second semester. I've assigned projects and reports for several years, but this will be the first time I've had a BOINC project. I typically offer half a dozen or so projects second semester after state testing and allow the students to pick two or three projects.

My reason for doing a BOINC project is not simply to have students do crunching, but to get them interested in the science behind the projects and feel involved in the process. It'll be great if they continue to run projects they are interested in, but my goal is to create life long learners and possibly even future physicists.

I plan to have them write a report on the projects focusing on the science of the specific projects, but also covering distributive computing in general. I'm very interesting the LHC and particle physics. Unfortunately I only had time at the beginning of the school year for a brief introduction to particle physics for my students because of state standards, but after the state testing I plan to go into more detail.
