1) Message boards : Number crunching : Error while computing/too many errors (Message 33165)

I think the problem has been resolved. Firstly, I reboot the system, before
starting the first LHC WU; whether that has any affect on preventing
errors, is not known, but, no errors have followed. Also, as before, I don't
have any other WU's running, except the particular LHC one. Any time I need
to check personal email, etc., I "pause" the running WU.

"Error while computing" errors, have resumed, with the latest WU's.
CMS and LHCb.

Ivan -- I've run both LHCb and CMS WU's, with VirtualBox 5.2.0. etc., and still receive the same errors, as before. Shall I keep running them, or await more info. from you?

Post:
I am getting many "Error while computing" errors (Too many total results).
The pass rate is less than 10%. My system is a Dell Latitude #7240 (4cpu's),
with Windows 7, BOINC ver. 7.8.3, and VBox 5.1.3r.

The errors occur, even when all other WU's have been "suspended".

Any ideas?

I'll add my voice to not receiving any WU's of any kind, in several days. Have
been holding off on other projects, in anticipation of receiving LHC@home wu's, so as to dedicate computer time for them.

LHC@home successfully added -- after VLHC@ome re-added. Whether a coincidence,
or not, am now back in business. I thank you folks for offering suggestions.

Gentlemen -- I've been on LHC@Home for quite some time, although I "Removed"
myself, for my own reasons. My account is still with LHC@Home, and can go back
and see some of the successful past WU's.

As for other projects, Einstein@Home, Rosetta@Home, Seti@Home, cpdn, etc.,
have given me no problems.

Am currently running CernVM_WebAPI, with no problems (It's non-BOINC, of course.).

Will try to re-add this project, then record the Event Log outputs.

*

The last attempt to add LHC@home did not seem to attach the project, either.
Below, is the single-line from the Event Log:

captainjack -- Have tried both ways. The first one, LHC@home yielded a
message that said that the project had been added. Nothing downloaded, thus
far. The other http route resulted in the afore-listed message.

Also, under BOINC Manager, "Projects", LHC@Home has not been added.

Eric --

I am rejoining the project, after a number of months hiatus. After entering
BOINC manager, Tools, Add Project) lhcathomeclassiccern.ch_sixtrack,
the following message is outputted: Project temporarily unavailable,
please try again.

Present computer: DELL Latitude E7240 (quad), with Windows 7.

Am I off by a dot?

Yes they should however no one has coded LHC applications for GPUs. The emergence of GPUs is extremely recent in a community where Fortran is still used and building of the machine started 17 years ago.

Ok, but isn´t this conservative and unprogressive? I mean, CERN is THE place for since. They have there the chance to find new physik and have to find new ways and theories to explain it. And on the other hand they are so small-minded an just see fortran, because they allways work with fortrane. Ok ok Fortran is very performance, beacause you have lot´s of librarys etc that are highly optimiced. But is it impossibel to bring them to C++ or so?

I have a very interesting discussion with some staff in the university and they say: yes some especial the older ones just work with fortrane and thats it. They are not open for new things. I think that´s a big mistake.

Look on Einstein@home. Perhaps they perhaps have found the shortest timelength (that is much larger than expected). Without the help of Boinc this chance for realy new science wouldn´t be given, because they haven´t the resources for this without BOINC.

Especial CPU time is allways limited, no matter how much you have, you allways can find new thinks to solve, or just crunch with a higher resolution. Why is CERN just say no to free CPU time? Ok it would be lot´s of work to bring \\\"equal\\\" performance to a home PC than to a Server in a serverfarm, but you haven´t to pay for it! So who cares about performance realy? Ohhh bad boy, your programm on Boinc is 10 times slower then on my cool serverfarm... And? Who cares? You haven´t to pay for current etc. Every singel solution you get is more or less for free! How much do CERN spend every year for hardware and maintenance? 20 Mio Euro or more? Just if you can save 0.1%, than this is a lot.

There must be so much work to do, that can solve on a normal PC very easy. Just find the trace of the particels through the detector should be a significant part of the work or not? And you can solve every singel event totaly independent from the other events (i can´t imagine something that avoid parallel solving) . Please correct me when i am wrong.

Summing up i want to say, that when i read whot you write here, and think about it, then must say, that it is a shame that you have so littel support from CERN.

PS: Yes i know Bigmac and i think he makes a great job here.

14) Message boards : Cafe LHC : dial-up participation (Message 16426)
Posted 27 Feb 2007 by Jim Martin
Post:
Gentlemen: I thank you for your comments/suggestion, in response to my
message #16396. Not wanting to hinder good science at LHC, but not desiring
to discontinue participation in the very worth-while project, I shall continue
accepting such WU's as become available.

One word, If I may: "Good science" is for everyone, and not an elite few.
One has only to harken to the late Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" account of what happened to the library (and librarian) at Alexandria, to know what can happen
(worst-case, certainly) to the best literary intentions, when the average person is not actively brought into the process. And, the "average person", today, as ever, is the tax-payer who funds such projects. More, not fewer,
computer users -- with their computers, such as they are -- should be encouraged to participate.

I look forward to continued participation with one and all, in LHC@Home.

Sincerely,

Jim Martin

Gentlemen: After a number of near-misses at obtaining a WU, I can only conclude that those whose computers are always on-line will always co-opt those
of us who are in a dial-up configuration (for other
valid reasons, eg, children in college).

Would it be possible for the good administrators at
LHC to keep a few WU's in abeyance, as a good-will
gesture? I am aware that the flood-gates will open,
when the project becomes 100% operational; however,
for old-time's sake . . .

Thanks/danke schon (sans umlaut),

How do I reattach to my LHC@home account? I'd

Thanks, in advance.
