Can anyone tell me how BOINC is improving, say, CMS. What exactly is the gain to these computers doing this processing? Surely it cannot be to save time to analyze data, so what is it exactly trying to accomplish?
Thanks in advance

Hi Maylinh,
This BOINC project LHC@home is contributing real computing power to the CERN experiments provided by thousands of volunteers lending us their home computers. The work they do is really incorporated into CERN’s results. Most of it is used to simulate experiments rather than analyse their measurements but this is an essential part of our work to compare theory with experiments. Hope this helps. Ben

Hello, it's been 10 years today that I started to participate in the project lhc@home.

I hope that these ten years of contribution and all these kwh have been useful to CERN in making the LHC a powerful tool for advancing scientific knowledge in quantum physics.
I also hope that your research will make the time travel possible soon :-)

Keep going on!

Well done Little Fr(ederik?),

Many thanks for all your work and yes, contributions like yours are extremely useful for CERN's progress in exploring the quantum world. However, the time travel problem isn't on our current list...

All the very best,

Ben (LHC@home co-founder)

There will be an LHC@home stand in Restaurant 2 (B.504) both Saturday and Sunday. We have goodies to give out like real CERN data on cassette tapes, stickers and some T-shirts. Plus you can chat to some of the CERN staffers who will welcome you.

Looking forward to seeing you,

CERN has at least three experiments looking at gravity and anti matter (not anti gravity to be precise). They are AeGIS, ALPHA and GBAR, all in the same hall called the Anti Matter Factory. An article you may enjoy is at https://cerncourier.com/does-antimatter-fall-up/ - good reading.

Just one detail: Strumia is not a CERN employee, he was just an invited speaker from INFN in Italy. But yes, his remarks have been officially deplored by CERN and his slides removed from the CERN conference website.

I had the same problem with the previous version (before mulit core). I dont know exact numbers, but maybe 1 out of 6 or so did not correctly setup the proxy.

Do you guys know why my Theroy VMs do NOT shut down correctly? This happens to every single task, e.g. this one: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=200422861
The log says:
2018-07-20 12:51:44 (4364): Guest Log: [INFO] Job finished in slot1 with 0.
2018-07-20 13:02:07 (4364): Guest Log: [INFO] Condor exited with return value N/A.

2018-07-20 13:07:11 (4364): VM did not power off when requested.
2018-07-20 13:07:11 (4364): VM was successfully terminated.

2018-07-20 13:07:11 (4364): Removing network bandwidth throttle group from VM.
2018-07-20 13:07:11 (4364): Removing VM from VirtualBox.
13:07:17 (4364): called boinc_finish(0)

It doesn't seem very serious as the VM was terminated even though the power-off failed.
Perhaps Laurence can comment but for now don't worry...
