Healthy New Year, everyone (for Thursday, if you're so inclined)

Even after all this time, I still can't resist grabbing a few Sixtracks when I spot a new batch.
(Not a full return as there's still Covid work to be done at WCG)

Biennial Scout trip to Kandersteg, postponed from 2019 to 2020, has now been pushed back to July 2022 so plenty of time to plan a drop-in en route.

Sounds good for a CERN drop-in!!

The problem has just been fixed with the MCPlots server. In answer to an email, Anton replied: “ It is fixed now, thanks for the pointer!
The problem was a bug in a free disk space check which was added recently.”

Ah, perhaps you meant "flippable top to bottom", leaving only 88 and 101. So then you're either 61 or 74... But neither of those seems flippable to me - sigh!

It's a remnant from the time the Theory application was a standalone project: Test4Theory and VirtualLHC.
The domain www.citizencyberscience.net seems to be hacked or bought.


Then remove it from the menu immediately :-)

LHC@home's Theory application will tomorrow pass the milestone of 5 TRILLION simulated events. This project, under its earlier name "Test4Theory", began production in 2011 and was the first BOINC project anywhere to use Virtual Machine technology (based on CERN's CernVM system).

Over the coming weeks we plan to publish some more details about all this on the LHC@home and CERN websites. Our timetables have of course been affected by the Coronavirus disruptions, but we absolutely could not miss announcing and celebrating such a milestone as this.

The whole LHC@home team sends our sincerest thanks to all our volunteers for enabling this achievement !!

Can anyone tell me how BOINC is improving, say, CMS. What exactly is the gain to these computers doing this processing? Surely it cannot be to save time to analyze data, so what is it exactly trying to accomplish?

Hi Maylinh,
This BOINC project LHC@home is contributing real computing power to the CERN experiments provided by thousands of volunteers lending us their home computers. The work they do is really incorporated into CERN’s results. Most of it is used to simulate experiments rather than analyse their measurements but this is an essential part of our work to compare theory with experiments. Hope this helps. Ben

Hello, it's been 10 years today that I started to participate in the project lhc@home.

I hope that these ten years of contribution and all these kwh have been useful to CERN in making the LHC a powerful tool for advancing scientific knowledge in quantum physics.
I also hope that your research will make the time travel possible soon :-)
