I've here some WU with this, where I've many hours crunching time, but the opponent trashed the WU after a few seconds. Interesting, that all the quick endings were running Intel i5 processors. Might they have triggered a processor bug?

2) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : i686 instead of x86_64: why? (Message 30994)

Thanks Harri. I believe our strength is in numbers. Why throw away if you
can still do something useful. "Many a mickle maks a muckle" :-) Eric.
(I will be running tests soon to re-compare 32-bit/64-bit performance.)

If you don't optimise for 64 bit and the modern extensions they have, because you want to have the backward compatibility for deprecated hardware, you will waste much more pool performance, than what you would lose by kicking the old systems out.

Well I must admit we just use 32-bit even on 64-bit systems. This is just to try
and keep the number of executables and the amount of testing to a minimum.
I suppose we also save a very little memory. Remember my priorities are
Reliability, Functionality and Performance in that order, even if I get it wrong
sometimes ! :-)
We are coming shortly with AVX, SSE2, and generic versions for all platforms
(but 64-bit for Macs). I'll rerun timing tests after this big task is complete.
Clearly SSE2/AVX are big performance improvements. More news whenever. Eric.

Isn't it about time to just drop 32 bit support? 32 bit only processors are more then 10 years old and their number and performance must be close to irrelevant in the total crunching pool.

Got flooded the last days with lot of sixtrack work, but now it's stalled again. I've noticed a lot of WU with runtime of only a few seconds, which then results into requesting lot of new WU in short period, maybe that't the reason for the blockage?

All my new workunits are valid so far, on AMD linux.

I just attached my AMD E350 with Ubuntu 12.04 and it downloaded the sse3 binary too.

The system completed the sse3 WU valid and at competitive speed.

I also didn't get the sse3 version yet, even BOINC is detecting all cpu flags correct. Have you configured the server right, the flag is called PNI and not SSE3 on linux.

Other projects have MUCH more users and they have no problems with their database connections, even when they are out of work (like SIMAP).
