21) Message boards : Cafe LHC : Man Fired for running Seti@home on company servers. (Message 3760)

The comments made in the article almost sounds like there was a personal dislike between the two people. I know of a company that a friend works for that will dismiss people for installing anything, even MSN messenger. It increases network traffic, creates more security issues, increases cost of support if something goes wrong, and means the person is doing work other than their job. At the end, it's increased expenses and problems.

A lot of companies (around here anyways) now have agreements that new employees have to sign when getting computers to work on saying they will use the computer for company use only and maybe terminiated if used otherwise. (I'm actually violating one of those agreements I signed posting this here.) :)

From the information on the test you were doing, it sounds like the new thread was created on the master database, but when viewing (the next page after the post) it was pulling from the slave database which hadn't been updated with the post. That or the administrators work lightning fast deleting everyone's posts the second they're created. :)

I got that line trying to post a new message on the forums and in the "Questions and Answers" area.

Also noticed yesterday (but seems fine this morning) that the post / view count on some posts were off. A thread which showed 1 post, 0 views actually had 7 posts when opening it up.

Just hit the site, the message thread <A>MD5 computation error[/url] shows only 1 post, and no views. Clicking on that thread shows 7 posts.

A problem related to the new database server?

AthlonRob posted a message on Seti's forums about 2 months ago with the URL to his scripts (the signature image script) as well statistic scripts (for an irc bot but can be easily modified for web pages). All php backend except for the xml data import which is pearl.

If I can find the link again, I'll link it here.

I was thinking the same thing. There should be a default computer object for every account that acts as the grave yard for the non-existing computers. This computer has no OS information, CPU information, etc. It's named the same for every account so reports can be ran easily excluding these computer objects and when you have computers in your list that's no longer crunching, merge them into this grave yard. :)

Does that mean I can't increase my work unit cache size, download all the work units I can to crunch, and suspend my boinc network access until after the credits are set to 0? :)

If everyone does it, we'll get instant credit afterwards. :)

I doubt too many people are going to be discouraged from joining this project because of the rules. To me, the rules are common sense which apply to all the projects (except for the image limitations rule). The only reason someone would be discouraged is if they disagreed with a rule.

If someone decides not to join because of a rule currently on the list then I doubt it's someone we'd really want here.

You can use one inline-picture in your post, but the size may not exceed more than 50kb. This is because there are lots of people without broadband internet connection and who need to pay for the bandwidth. Browsing the message boards with many/big images will be slow and expensive for such users. Big collection of images also make message boards unclear. If you really need to share multiple pictures with others, just use a hyperlink.

The boinc devs. have added an upgrade for the forums which allows people to show all images in the forums as a link so they don't get hit with the large image downloads. Are there plans to upgrade the boinc forums here to add the new options?

Credits for work units received outside of a team do not get added to a team when joining. Only the work that the new member does going forward while being part of the team will be added to the team score.

In my case, LHC added itself again - I had 2 "LHC@Home" entries on my projects tab and it was trying to download sixtrack and work units for the 2nd entry. Tried restarting boinc but it quit on it's on instantly when I tried running it. Starting it a 2nd time worked with an error message at startup, but found the 2nd LHC@home missing, but sixtrack app. and work units downloading into my Pirates@home directory. Reset Pirates@home and it seems to be fine now.

I had the same problem but then got a new problem at the same time. The work unit downloads I had going were timing out / MD5 checksum errors, etc. Next time I checked, my boinc client started downloading the entire sixtrack_4.45 executable and .tga files, etc. even though sixtrack_4.45 was active and crunching another work unit..

Odd...
