1) Message boards : Number crunching : Please note: this project rarely has work (Message 22670)

Post:
Well, kamaradski,

There will be work, yes. Most probably there will not be enough work to keep all computers running 24/24 at any moment.

My suggestion: also join some other project on Boinc where you see non-stop work coming from. That way you can keep your processors happily running non-stop.

For suggestions, you can click on the name of anyone here in the message boards, or do a quick google ;)
2) Message boards : Number crunching : A lot of WU\\\'s but not to get (Message 22662)

18 WU\'s this year, averaging about 9 credits a piece.

My other projects do not feel the pain when LHC gets active, and LHC gets my help when needed. Sounds like a perfect situation...

One month after the last post on this thread.

There seems to have been a trickle of work units starting November 16th and ending December 13th 2010. Something is still moving...

Hm,

I had 36 tasks all together in this timeframe on a bunch of computers with a LOW resource share. Only a few managed to get past the 20-second run. I guess they escaped the collider through holes from previous early collisions ;)

Anyway, I did not check back here for a while, and am glad to see there is work.

There\'s about 170 wu\'s pending on my account, going back to 2007.

Indeed, you are not the only one ;)
6) Message boards : Number crunching : So, what ARE we doing ... ? (Message 22261)

So, *is* there a commitment to LHC@home by
CERN as a whole? Do the director general
or any of the departments have a position
on using LHC@home? We represent a potentially
huge computing resource. Is there a commitment
of resources beyond volunteer programming and use?

The information you ask for, can be found in the Café message board, under the \"whatever happened...\" thread.

Look especcially for the bigmac posts. Happy reading ;)

It seems that you missed out on the previous release of work units. There were plenty of those for a short time. Maybe you should check your settings?

Now the feeder is dry again, so right now you need patience again.

I notice you work on several projects.

A good idea, if you have not done so already, is to set the resource share of LHC@home really high. That way, when there is work, Boinc will scoop up a lot more work units to try to balance out.

There may be other issues though.

18070395 Success Done 1,123.02 4.20 pending
18070396 Success Done 7.54 0.02 pending

There\'s a big difference in computing time.

I have had a couple before that ran for a matter of seconds. Today I aborted one task that was at 0.34% after 1 hour. It would have taken 8 days of crunching, and the deadline was 7 days.

For Switzerland, I only counted French, German and Italian. Now that you mention, indeed I remember there is Reto Romancio too. I didn\'t know that the Swiss Airforce language is English. Thanks! Every day learning something new. :)

Clarification: it was not intended to suggest that Switzerland and Belgium have identical languages.

In Switzerland, speak 4 languages right?

I think in Switserland they have 3 official languages, just like where I live. That\'s French, German and Dutch. Since about 1581 Spanish is not an official language anymore in my region. :D

Saludos desde Flandes.

Cristobal,

The available information can be found in the thread \\\"Apologies...\\\". Read the posts from bigmac.

Your English is better than my Spanish ;)

Check the message boards in the Cafe, more specifically the \"apologies\" thread. If there\'s too much text, skip everything except the bigmac posts. There you will see that your post here was unfounded.

If I understand this well, then it means that LHC@Home will be used for stability of the project, and the GRID will process the results.

Correct?

The fact that there will not be enough work for everybody to crunch 24-24 is moot, as is the phase in the process where Boinc is inserted. The fact that there will be useful work is what counts.

Let us see what the Bells of Rome bring us this year.

CERN will be restarting the LHC around 20Feb.

It would be nice that! This would be a nice birthday gift! ;)

Don\'t confuse CERN with LHC@Home. If you\'re satisfied with crashed atoms for your birthday then it will be nice indeed. If, on the other hand, you expect Work Units by then: start stocking up on handkerchiefs cause you\'ll most probably need them.

To avoid disillusion, read the bigmac posts in this very thread. They are hard to miss, and very clear in their meaning. In his posts, also do not confuse \"may\", \"can\", \"might\", \"would\" with \"shall\" or \"is\".

The most reliable information comes from Bigmac. I suggest you read his Message 21647 earlier in this thread, dated November 21st 2009.

You can check in the \"Café\" in the \"whatever happened...\" thread. For now the only feedback from the project is from 1 scientist (bigmac) who explains the problems that LHC@home has.

If LHC starts up again, then maybe they will have time for your request. Maybe in another 200 days. Or 20. Or 2000 days.

The vaguest of timeframes can be found in the \"Whatever happened\" thread. The suggestion is that there will be no more work units. Look for bigmac posts.
