Post:
The database underlying LHC@home will be down on Saturday 27th of June due to an upgrade of a DB storage rack.

Hence LHC@home BOINC services will be unavailable for a good part of the day. (Est 5:30-12:30 UTC)

So your BOINC client connections to our servers are likely to fail on Saturday.

Thanks and happy crunching!

This should be fixed now, also for wget and older BOINC clients.

This expiration took many of us by surprise:

Sorry for the trouble and happy crunching.

Due to a failure of a database storage system, a number of database services at CERN failed on Wednesday afternoon. The LHC@home servers were affected as well, as the BOINC database was unavailable and requests timed out.

Sorry for the trouble and happy crunching!
25) Message boards : News : CERN and COVID-19 (Message 42258)
Posted 24 Apr 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Like many organisations, CERN is also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers in the CERN community are trying to help out in different ways, as explained on this web page.

As part of this effort to fight COVID-19, we also contribute computing power to Folding@home and Rosetta@home from temporarily available servers that were about to be decommissioned.

During periods like this with little work from LHC@home, we also encourage you to participate in other BOINC projects such as Rosetta@home and contribute to the global fight of the pandemic.

Many thanks for your contributions to LHC@home and continued happy crunching!

With the best of wishes of good health for your and your families from the LHC@home team.

The LHC@home servers will be down tomorrow Wednesday 11th of March from 6AM to 8AM UTC due to a database intervention.

Hence your BOINC clients may defer uploads or downloads. Thanks for your patience and happy crunching!

29) Message boards : Number crunching : No tasks at all available? (Message 41680)
Posted 21 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
We had an outage of some IT services at CERN yesterday, so task submission for some applications stopped for a while. Back to normal today. Hopefully SixTrack users will submit a new batch soon too.

Thanks for your contributions and happy crunching!
30) Message boards : ATLAS application : ATLAS switched to failover frontier server (Message 41658)
Posted 20 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
We have issues with storage used for a number of CERN computing services today. The BOINC servers are not affected, but CVMFS and other layers used by the ATLAS (and CMS) application are. Hence there are no new ATLAS tasks generated now.

Hopefully things should be back to normal soon.
31) Message boards : Number crunching : Why do I still offer computing? (Message 41560)
Posted 14 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
It is true that the LHC experiment applications require more than the average volunteer computing project. But our default SixTrack application is much more lightweight.

When Sixtrack tasks starts flowing again, your contributions will be much appreciated. As indicated in this post by Alessio we shall soon get more Sixtrack jobs.

Thanks for your contributions to LHC@home and happy chrunching!

Due to a network problem in the CERN computer centre early Thursday morning, our BOINC servers have lost access to a storage cluster. Hence uploads are failing and access to web pages as well. Hopefully this should be fixed soon.
34) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Wrong Factor sent by Project Server (Message 40766)
Posted 3 Dec 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Thanks for reporting, but this is strange. On the server side, we have no related changes to CPU factors in plan classes as far as I can see. And the Sixtrack templates have not been changed since 2018. Our server code was last upgraded in September, and other later tuning has been mainly for Theory.

Since when have you seen this behaviour?

Perhaps our SixTrack colleagues have got further insights.

Hi Yeti, I cannot see any trace of errors from this Android host in our scheduler logs.

What happens if you do "Update" on the BOINC client on this device?

AFAIK there are other Android users running SixTrack ok.

During the CERN Open Days 2019, we will have a small LHC@home stand as part of the IT activities in building 504 near the Data Centre.

LHC@home will also be present at the ATLAS experiment site, in the ATLAS Computing Corner.

We hope that many of you will be able to visit CERN during the Open Days and would be happy to see you here!

Please refer to: Plan your visit and the list of activities during the Open days for more information about all the visit points on the CERN sites.
