Posted 18 days ago by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
The LHC@home servers will be down tomorrow Wednesday 11th of March from 6AM to 8AM UTC due to a database intervention.

Hence your BOINC clients may defer uploads or downloads. Thanks for your patience and happy crunching!
2) Message boards : News : LHC@home web site upgrade (Message 41829)
Posted 22 days ago by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
The LHC@home information site on Drupal that includes the FAQ and other information about the applications running on LHC@home is being upgraded now.

Hence links to the FAQ and other information pages about LHC@home will be unavailable for a while today.

The new site will be ready later this afternoon.

3) Message boards : Number crunching : No tasks at all available? (Message 41680)
Posted 21 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
We had an outage of some IT services at CERN yesterday, so task submission for some applications stopped for a while. Back to normal today. Hopefully SixTrack users will submit a new batch soon too.

Thanks for your contributions and happy crunching!
4) Message boards : ATLAS application : ATLAS switched to failover frontier server (Message 41658)
Posted 20 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
We have issues with storage used for a number of CERN computing services today. The BOINC servers are not affected, but CVMFS and other layers used by the ATLAS (and CMS) application are. Hence there are no new ATLAS tasks generated now.

Hopefully things should be back to normal soon.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : Why do I still offer computing? (Message 41560)
Posted 14 Feb 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
It is true that the LHC experiment applications require more than the average volunteer computing project. But our default SixTrack application is much more lightweight.

When Sixtrack tasks starts flowing again, your contributions will be much appreciated. As indicated in this post by Alessio we shall soon get more Sixtrack jobs.

Thanks for your contributions to LHC@home and happy chrunching!
6) Message boards : News : Server outage - uploads failing (Message 41345)

Post:
One of our 3 file servers still had issues, it should be fixed now.
7) Message boards : News : Server outage - uploads failing (Message 41331)
Posted 23 Jan 2020 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Due to a network problem in the CERN computer centre early Thursday morning, our BOINC servers have lost access to a storage cluster. Hence uploads are failing and access to web pages as well. Hopefully this should be fixed soon.
8) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Wrong Factor sent by Project Server (Message 40766)
Posted 3 Dec 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Thanks for reporting, but this is strange. On the server side, we have no related changes to CPU factors in plan classes as far as I can see. And the Sixtrack templates have not been changed since 2018. Our server code was last upgraded in September, and other later tuning has been mainly for Theory.

Since when have you seen this behaviour?

Perhaps our SixTrack colleagues have got further insights.
9) Message boards : News : Database intervention Monday morning (Message 40590)
Posted 22 Nov 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
LHC@home and associated BOINC services will be unavailable for about 1 hour on Monday 25th of November due to a database storage intervention.

Thanks for your understanding and happy crunching.
10) Message boards : Number crunching : LHC on android (Message 40089)

Post:
Hi Yeti, I cannot see any trace of errors from this Android host in our scheduler logs.

What happens if you do "Update" on the BOINC client on this device?

AFAIK there are other Android users running SixTrack ok.

Thanks to you guys for testing and keeping an eye on things!

And thanks to the contributors to the BOINC code, who have implemented improvements over the years.
12) Message boards : News : Server upgrade (Message 40050)
Posted 30 Sep 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Following a couple of weeks of tests in the LHC@home development project, we are upgrading our production server cluster to BOINC server release 1.2 this afternoon. During the update we will be running with slightly lower server capacity than usual.

With the Open Days markings please follow: "ME66" and the Data Centre. LHC@home and restaurant 2 in building 504 is nearby.
14) Message boards : News : CERN Open Days in 2 weeks! (Message 39763)
Posted 30 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
During the CERN Open Days 2019, we will have a small LHC@home stand as part of the IT activities in building 504 near the Data Centre.

LHC@home will also be present at the ATLAS experiment site, in the ATLAS Computing Corner.

We hope that many of you will be able to visit CERN during the Open Days and would be happy to see you here!

Please refer to: Plan your visit and the list of activities during the Open days for more information about all the visit points on the CERN sites.
15) Message boards : News : Many queued tasks - server status page erratic (Message 39683)

Post:
Not sure what causes this. Our 3 file servers are fine and not with much load. It could be a local ISP issue too.
16) Message boards : News : Many queued tasks - server status page erratic (Message 39674)
Posted 21 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Due to the very high number of queued Sixtrack tasks, we have enabled 4 load-balanced scheduler/feeder servers to handle the demand. (Our bottleneck is the database, but several schedulers can cache more tasks to be dispatched.)

Our server status page does not currently show in real time the daemon status on remote servers. Hence the server status page may indicate a varying number of processes, depending on which web server is active.

Please also be patient if you are not getting tasks for your preferred application quickly enough. After a few retries, there will be some tasks. Thanks for your understanding and happy crunching!

17) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Server Status (Message 39659)
Posted 20 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Yes, more than 3M tasks in the queue and therefore the BOINC feeder queries take much longer than usual to fill the scheduler buffer to send out tasks. Hence there will be no tasks available from time to time, as the scheduler runs out of tasks. We'll activate a second scheduler like earlier this year, however our bottleneck is the database.

The server status page will be alternating between 2 servers while this workaround is active.
18) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : LHC@home | Scheduler request failed: SSL connect error (Message 39616)
Posted 15 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Sorry, I cannot reproduce this, my BOINC client is happy.

Do you have a new BOINC client or Curl version that does not include the usual SSL certificate bundle? (Ref. the link in your post.)
19) Message boards : News : Server downtime (Message 39192)
Posted 26 Jun 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Our BOINC servers were unavailable from 13:45 to 15:30 CET this afternoon due to a problem with a shared storage cluster. This explains possible download/upload errors from your clients.

Sorry for the trouble and happy crunching.
20) Message boards : Number crunching : Anonymous Platform - Scheduler request failed: HTTP internal server error (Message 38913)
Posted 20 May 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
In principle no application should specify platform anonymous. If you would like to debug this further, please try on our LHCathome-dev project, where we have more flexibility with the server code. Laurence and other BOINC developers could try to fix the bug for upcoming releases, so that the scheduler does not end up with an internal server error.

But this is anyway what you get if you give garbled input to a CGI script.
