Hi Yeti, I cannot see any trace of errors from this Android host in our scheduler logs.

What happens if you do "Update" on the BOINC client on this device?

AFAIK there are other Android users running SixTrack ok.

Thanks to you guys for testing and keeping an eye on things!

And thanks to the contributors to the BOINC code, who have implemented improvements over the years.

Following a couple of weeks of tests in the LHC@home development project, we are upgrading our production server cluster to BOINC server release 1.2 this afternoon. During the update we will be running with slightly lower server capacity than usual.

During the CERN Open Days 2019, we will have a small LHC@home stand as part of the IT activities in building 504 near the Data Centre.

LHC@home will also be present at the ATLAS experiment site, in the ATLAS Computing Corner.

We hope that many of you will be able to visit CERN during the Open Days and would be happy to see you here!

Please refer to: Plan your visit and the list of activities during the Open days for more information about all the visit points on the CERN sites.

Not sure what causes this. Our 3 file servers are fine and not with much load. It could be a local ISP issue too.
7) Message boards : News : Many queued tasks - server status page erratic (Message 39674)
Posted 21 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Due to the very high number of queued Sixtrack tasks, we have enabled 4 load-balanced scheduler/feeder servers to handle the demand. (Our bottleneck is the database, but several schedulers can cache more tasks to be dispatched.)

Our server status page does not currently show in real time the daemon status on remote servers. Hence the server status page may indicate a varying number of processes, depending on which web server is active.

Please also be patient if you are not getting tasks for your preferred application quickly enough. After a few retries, there will be some tasks. Thanks for your understanding and happy crunching!

8) Message boards : Sixtrack Application : Server Status (Message 39659)
Posted 20 Aug 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Yes, more than 3M tasks in the queue and therefore the BOINC feeder queries take much longer than usual to fill the scheduler buffer to send out tasks. Hence there will be no tasks available from time to time, as the scheduler runs out of tasks. We'll activate a second scheduler like earlier this year, however our bottleneck is the database.

The server status page will be alternating between 2 servers while this workaround is active.

Sorry, I cannot reproduce this, my BOINC client is happy.

Do you have a new BOINC client or Curl version that does not include the usual SSL certificate bundle? (Ref. the link in your post.)

Post:
Our BOINC servers were unavailable from 13:45 to 15:30 CET this afternoon due to a problem with a shared storage cluster. This explains possible download/upload errors from your clients.

Sorry for the trouble and happy crunching.
11) Message boards : Number crunching : Anonymous Platform - Scheduler request failed: HTTP internal server error (Message 38913)
Posted 20 May 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
In principle no application should specify platform anonymous. If you would like to debug this further, please try on our LHCathome-dev project, where we have more flexibility with the server code. Laurence and other BOINC developers could try to fix the bug for upcoming releases, so that the scheduler does not end up with an internal server error.

But this is anyway what you get if you give garbled input to a CGI script.

Post:
We are very grateful to have been chosen for the BOINC Pentathlon of SETI Germany over the next days. For this, the Sixtrack team has submitted a huge backlog of jobs, and our servers will primarily distribute Sixtrack tasks over the next days. There will only be drip-feed of other applications for now until our backlog is reduced. For fans of other applications, stay tuned or run Sixtrack for a few days.

Nils, how can it be that the Server Status Page still shows only "running" for the Scheduler, for the rest of the programs it shows "stopped" ???

Because the cache of the server status page shows the information for the server boincai01 and the server showing you the page is another host boincai02, boincai03 etc. Our server configuration does not show the status of remote daemons on other hosts. (We could display a page for each server, but this has other side effects.)

The daemons and services are running on boincai01, and we have 3 other servers running schedulers and feeders. But you will see this page with "not running" entries intermittently for a few days.

Delivery of other applications than Sixtrack will be slow until the backlog of Sixtrack tasks has been reduced.

Correct, right now there are very few VB tasks being shipped. We have just started a 4'th scheduler server that should soon ship VB tasks.

We hope to get back to our usual operation later, meanwhile this parallelised server setup is a workaround to ensure that enough tasks are flowing for Sixtrack. Tasks for other apps will slowly be coming along later.

Post:
Sorry Magic, you are wrong. We have added 2 additional scheduler hosts last night that serve Sixtrack tasks while the main host boincai01 does a slow database query for all applications.

While these other 2 servers reply to the alias lhcathome.cern.ch, the server status page shows the main host boincai01 and daemons as not running, although they are and other daemons are running too, but not shown in the page.

The scheduler will from time to time reply: "No tasks available" and only drip-feed ATLAS, CMS and Theory tasks right now, but Sixtrack tasks should be served every 10 minutes or so. This is a workaround while trying to get back to our regular speed of serving tasks. Please note that a change of database server did not help much.
19) Message boards : Number crunching : Can't get tasks or reset project (Message 38823)
Posted 13 May 2019 by Profile Nils Høimyr
Post:
Because after a daemon restart, it takes time for the feeder to execute on the server and to fill the shared memory buffer for the scheduler. During the initial feeder run, the scheduler will report "feeder not running" until it has received tasks.

Then later you may have other messages, like no tasks available, if the scheduler memory at the time of your request has no tasks left for the particular application you happen to request.

That the BOINC client defers communication by 1 hour is good, it is designed to be resilient and to resume work later.

Ref. the news posting, our DB was back again around 5pm our local time. The feeder query is still slow, though, so there will be moments with no tasks in the scheduler buffer.
