"...he had to work real hard to win" ? "Looks better on his signature" ? ---I thought HomeGnome was a she. Boy am I embarrassed.

I think that HomeGnome is gender confused.

And yes, Ray, I say that without fear.

I think you may be right. There's nothing quite like a new toy to distract adult children from "other things". Yes, lhc@home is the "other thing" - we are the "others". Oh well....

Whoa! 30K or so work units, and I didn't even get one.
Looks like my computer is a little slow on the draw!
they were not even peanuts... 15 min runtime on a 2.6 GHz P4 per WU....
I'm getting really upset about all of this now.

This project is an exercise in patience. Try to find your quiet place within. Feel the zen of lhc... time fades into triviality. The Universe is unfolding as it should.

Patience, grasshopper, is one of the few true virtues.

You mean lists like:

  • you would pipe helium escaping a relief valve away from the confined space
  • then no danger with electrical equipment
  • ok, who's hoarding all the helium?

Ooo, nice.... I like. Here are the reasons I like Dagorath's post:

  • Look at me! I know how to use BBCode lists
  • I'm a big smart ass
  • Dagorath is a way-bigger smart ass
  • Helium can make you talk like a munchkin!

Sweet.

Weather forecast says that Entropy will be up from Yesterday.
Thank goodness! Any less Entropy, and the Universe might become one crystalline singularity ...or would the process of singularity conversion of the Universe from it's present state contradict the afore mentioned and hypothesized crystal-state thus instantaneously producing another Big Bang which would support the theory of a Cyclical Universe which was largely disproved by the recent discovery that matter expansion in the Universe is accelerating? Hmmmm....

Hella yes!

And you're right about it being a pain when posting. I've learned to copy and paste all of my posts to a word processor before clicking "Post reply". Otherwise you can lose your work. Hella, hella, hella... boy, I love saying that word.

...I've experimented with different cache settings (from 0.1 to 7) and my labors have revealed that 3 days is pretty good. Less than 3 will usually cause your machine to pick up very few (or ONE) work units even if the run is huge [ >50000 ]. A cache number more than 3 will result in often getting NOTHING from small runs [ <20000 ] ...but I encourage others to tweak my number and post if they find a better Magic Constant!

Using 4 or 5 will work if you do the following:

1. Give lhc@home at least 75% resource share on any given machine.

2. Don't crunch for too many projects on any one machine, but make sure you crunch for at least one other project on each machine - Climate Prediction, Climate Attribution, SETI, Einstein, Rosetta, and the like are good candidates.

3. Keep an eye on the "other" projects running alongside lhc; they may have greedy tendencies that will block out lhc (even with a 0.01% resource share.. yes, I've seen it happen.)

4. Run your machine to death. You will get more lhc WUs if your machine has been crunching like crazy for other project(s) during lhc droughts.

That's my word.

Carefully hidden Suburban Robots are currently monitoring reality, and we are working to move industrial robots from the more advanced factories to society.

Smart Patrol. Know where to go.

Btw... is there any way to force a gphx to appear even if other project is being active?

Nope. The screen saver gphx can only be seen when you are crunching an lhc work unit. This is frustrating for some because they have NEVER seen what the gphx look like... Even if a WU is downloaded, it is often completed and returned before the machine's user even knows what happened.

A pity, because lhc has a pretty cool screen saver!

With no work to crunch, we get bored. If you're offended by the "hill-folk" jokes, just post some comedy of your own... I'd appreciate some fresh material; tell us what you think is funny, NBIT.

Don't like my "negatives vibes"? Ariel, with this project if you don't have hope you don't have anything. Your RAC of (currently) 10 and mine of zero supports that....What I think is that my comment was meant humorously, tongue-in-cheek. Don't take it serious.

Yikes! (seems to fit the mood of this thread) and Happy Easter.

Yo, Mr. "Nothing But Idle Time" - *aarg* - I did take your post as being humorously light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek, nose-in-pants, etc. I was just playing off of you, man! Relax. Take a chill pill; I prefer Xanax myself... it really takes the edge off, and the stuff makes you feel goooooood. My reply to your post was a funky, awkward, off-beat, weirded-out, positive vibe to you and all the LHC folk. Speaking of "folk" I don't really know much about hill-folk at all... but I did see Deliverance.

Peace.

Just a bump to get the attention of other PlanetQuest enthusiasts... got any info to pass along?

Luv ya all!

"Don't worry" usually means you should worry, or at least not get your hopes too high.

We don't take kindly to any o' dem "high hopes" here at LHC (spoken with Mountain Folk/inbred/hick accent) ...ya want high hopes? Go crunch fur one uh doze fancy pro-teeen foldin' projects.

There's work when there's work, ya hear? Dern whippersnappers.

That sounds... uh... painful and smelly!
Perhaps you should see a doctor...

I did see a doctor, who referred me to a GI specialist, who referred me to a proctologist, who referred me back to a generalist, who referred me to Internal Medicine, who referred me to the Hospital Director, who asked me to leave the facility and not come back. My HMO just canceled my plan and refunded the premiums from the past 6 months. Feeling much better now, though... thanks for your concern --;)

In regards to this issue, Dagorath is on fire!... but this time the heat is hitting dead center!!

His words are precisely on target and I couldn't agree more. Good thing he wasn't banned for the infamous flame-throwing in the renamed "Flame Fest 2007". Ironically, I disagree with nearly everything he said in that thread (a.k.a "Fairer distribution of work") but it was lots of fun.

You have a hot head Dagorath, but it often thinks well.
