21) Message boards : Number crunching : Overclocking?....Not! ;) (Message 18161)

I believe LHC is much more sensitive to floating point errors than other projects. They have even had problems with the slight differences between the way Intel and AMD implement floating point math. Your overclocked CPU is probably returning slightly incorrect results on other projects as well but they match closely enough that you still get credit. The thing with LHC is that if the first calculation is off by even 0.0000[...]001 then by the end you are way off because later calculations are all based on previously calculated numbers.

Pretty sure the server will resend it regardless of your client state file. I'm pretty sure I've seen seti send me the same work units after doing a project reset on my machine. But I'm assuming LHC hasn't updated their code in so long that this option probably isn't available in their server. According to Neasan (or was it Alex?) they are going to update it within the next couple of weeks.

*fingers crossed*

*sigh*

Thats the thing on this project though... There isn't always more work to do! They wanted to make sure new users drawn in by this press release have at least SOME work to do so that they don't attach and immediately get an error message. They want the current batch of work units to last well into next week. Granted, 2/day DOES seem awfully low but I'm not going to ding them for being overly cautious. There are other BOINC projects that can keep your computer busy for the rest of the day.

Does this mean I will finally be able to delete my 3 year old computers from my LHC account?! :)

I posted this over in the "Happenings" thread but I'll repost here since this thread is dedicated to the topic.

app_info.xml that goes in the boinc/projects/lhcathome.cern.ch/ directory:

<app_info>
    <app>
        <name>sixtrack</name>
    </app>
    <file_info>
        <name>sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>sixtrack</app_name>
        <version_num>466</version_num>
        <file_ref>
            <file_name>sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
            <main_program/>
        </file_ref>
    </app_version>
</app_info>

Sorry about the double spacing... For some reason the code tag is putting in extra <br>s or something.

The 32 bit executable can be downloaded at
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/download/sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu

As was pointed out by Stefan in the other thread, don't forget to chmod +x (755) it!

I've been using this for over a year now.

@[B^S] Stefan Ledwina:

Just drop this app_info.xml file into the boinc/projects/lhcathome.cern.ch/ folder:
<app_info>
    <app>
        <name>sixtrack</name>
    </app>
    <file_info>
        <name>sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu</name>
        <executable/>
    </file_info>
    <app_version>
        <app_name>sixtrack</app_name>
        <version_num>466</version_num>
        <file_ref>
            <file_name>sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu</file_name>
            <main_program/>
        </file_ref>
    </app_version>
</app_info>

And then download the 32 bit executable which is at
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/download/sixtrack_4.66_i686-pc-linux-gnu

Restart boinc and crunch away! my amd64 machine

EDIT: ya'll need to update your css or something... the code bbcode tag looks horrible!

Yeah I would definitely not complain about clearing out some dead wood... heck I would even be happy if they just cleaned up the results that were in the database before the transfer from CERN took place! I have some ancient hosts that haven't run BOINC in 2 years that are still listed here and I can't delete them to clean up my cross-project stats :(

I think I had to re-login when the URL switched from http://lhcathome.cern.ch/ to http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/ but thats it - now I stay logged in just fine. Using Opera as well. Do you maybe have the wrong URL bookmarked? (without the /lhcathome/ at the end maybe?)

Edit: on second thought I don't think that is the case as I get a 403 error when I try to go to http://lhcathome.cern.ch/home.php - I thought it was redirecting and the browser may be doing something weird with the cookies... but I guess not. I got nothin'

Do I smell some fellow Opera users?? The very fact that you are even testing your new look in Opera just might let me forgive your misspelling of the word "color"... just maybe :)

I always enjoy listening to FF users bragging about some new cool plugin that lets them do something new... and then telling them that I've had that functionality in Opera for 3 years. Not to say FF isn't a good browser... I just fell in love with Opera before FF was popular and see no reason to change yet :)

Edit: I hope the third party stats sites won't crash with the lots of new hosts...

I'm only showing 117,000 hosts or so. Seti has 1.4 MILLION :)

However it does appear that LHC has fixed some problems that used to be present in their host data left over from the upgrade gone bad over a year ago. Yay!

Neasan, You must not be running an up to date php codebase. The BOINC web code has had a feature in it for several months now that allows a team member to request foundership if the founder is inactive. It sends an email to the founder asking them to respond within 60 (or was it 90?) days and if no response is received then the original requester can take over foundership.

Any chance you could install this update? The Knights Who Say Ni! could use a new founder as well. Haven't seen F-12 Pilot online in serveral months now.

While this isn't a huge deal it DOES mean that stats sites like mine will have to change their import scripts to find the XML files

IIRC the Boinc servercode stores the actual location of the stats (which may be variable for different servers) in a central xml-file that is stored at a fixed location. So the scripts should not use a fixed location for the files but the info the projects give.

Norbert

Yeah... except that "fixed location" is the db_dump.xml file in the /stats/ directory of the HTML base - the same place as the stats XML files :)

Woohoo!

As for bugs... here is a biggie that you are probably aware of: XML stats export :)

However there is one somewhat related issue. It looks like the main project files have moved from http://lhcathome.cern.ch/ to http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/

While this isn't a huge deal it DOES mean that stats sites like mine will have to change their import scripts to find the XML files since http://lhcathome.cern.ch/stats/ gives a 403 error but http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/stats/ at least exists and has the db_dump.xml file in it so I'm assuming this is where the files will eventually appear.

Plus this is not the first report of censorship and sensless bannings I have heard from Predictor. Several of our team members stopped crunching Predictor back in the fall of 2006 because one of our members was banned for bringing up some perfectly legitimate concerns. No spamming, no flames - just questions. I haven't spent enough time researching it all but the evidence certainly seems to be stacking up against the Predictor project...

Hey admins, once you get the project moved and upgraded to the latest version of BOINC you can appoint users as moderators to keep this type of flame fest under control... Just in case you needed more incentive to complete the move :)
