1) Message boards : Theory Application : ACCESSDENIED errors (Message 46432)

I don't think it's likely to be a network problem because I'm running LHC on 4 other machines which are having no problems. Ditto with security, they're all running the same app, Digital Secure which is Verizon's offering of McAfee.

The odd thing is that this machine was running LHC fine at one time. When COVID arrived on the scene I switched to Rosetta & WCG and just came back to LHC recently.

Puzzling.

Thanks for responding, Crystal.

I'm not familiar with Hyper-V but it appears that it is installed but not enabled. I.e. in the Windows Features list it is not checked as being turned on. I have another Windows 10 machine that shows the same for Hyper-V and am running some Theory tasks on it now. They "seem" to be running OK, i.e. they've run significantly longer than the failed tasks on the other machine.

I'm getting these errors on one machine frequently:

ERROR [COM]: aRC=E_ACCESSDENIED (0x80070005) aIID={5047460a-265d-4538-b23e-ddba5fb84976} aComponent={MachineWrap} aText={The object functionality is limited}, preserve=false aResultDetail=0

Here's a link to a typical result: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=346204664

Due to the errors, the server has understandably set a quota of one task per day on that device. The machine is running Windows 10.and BOINC 7.16.20.

I'd appreciate any hints anybody has on how to fix this.

Thanks.

Usually it means that your computer is failing to crunch the tasks and is just getting errors. So server stops sending you new tasks (only one per day allowed) until the host finishes some tasks successfully.

Ah! That makes sense. I'm apparently getting some "ACCESSDENIED" errors. Since they are happening running Theory I'll take the follow-up question there.

Thank you very much, Harri, for your help.

Hello.
Computer https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10750907 does not take tasks and in the event log I have a message "This computer has finished a daily quota of 1 tasks".
What to do to remedy this?

I'm getting this message too on one machine. That machine is not set up for ATLAS tasks but this is the only mention anywhere on the forums of this message.

Anybody have any idea what's going on?

Thanks.

In addition something went wrong with this version update but nonetheless it would only be the envelope.

Thank you, hadn't seen that.

(The other problem (downloading CMS) was my error.)

My v49 CMS tasks were consistently crashing recently, not 100% but a large majority. When I read here that v50 was available I aborted all the v49's in my queue, but they were replaced by more of the same. I then changed my preferences to exclude CMS tasks (temporarily), aborted the new V49's I'd been sent, and updated again. What I got was more CMS v49 tasks.

3 questions:

1) How long does it take for preference changes to take effect on the server?

2) When can I expect to be able to download v50 tasks to see if that helps?

3) ... or, is there something else stupid I'm doing wrong.

Thanks.

Thanks, Jim.

I went a step further. I just detached from everything and let current tasks die. I uninstalled BOINC and then deleted all BOINC directories. I then re-installed and re-attached to BOINCSTATS and let it rip.

It immediately got one Sixtrack but nothing else. I then turned Sixtrack off, waited a few minutes, and updated. Nothing. Turned Sixtrack back on, waited a few, and updated again and then got CMS and Theory.

This is clearly beyond my ken. Thanks for your response. That got me on the right track.

One of my machines (https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10509223) has been unable to get any new work for any subproject for weeks now.

This began after I got it back from HP for repair and they replaced the motherboard. Initially it got work (or maybe still had the work from before, not sure) but it immediately got a slew of errors because HP doesn't enable virtualization by default. Fixed that and since then can't get anything, not even Sixtrack. The message I get is the usual:

--- LHC@home | Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: not highest priority project; NVIDIA GPU: GPUs not usable; Intel GPU: GPUs not usable)

My priority for LHC is as high as I can make it but just in case I tested it by suspending all other projects. Still no work.

I am getting work on other machines.

I figure I've done something stupid but I can't figure it out. Any help greatly appreciated. Just please don't LOL if it's as dumb a mistake as I suspect. :-)

Export stats works but not updated. Files are from 2019-07-21 but process not started after reboot of server.

Could we have a check on this?

Stats exports (at least BOINCSTATS) are working again. Thank you to whomever is responsible for getting it going. It's appreciated.

Bump!

I know and understand that issues like this are (obviously) not critical to the science but many of your volunteers like to see it. if it can't be taken care of right away, please let us know what the issue is and / or when you expect to be able to address it. No news is really not good news.

Thanks, Jim. I turned the no work option off and I'll see what happens.

I left it set that way (i.e. accept others if no work) because I'd never noticed Theory and LHCb having no work between them but I see now that the total unsent is pretty low so I'll guess that's what happened.

Hi,

If this is in the wrong place I apologize, but it seems like more of a BOINC or LHC system problem than ATLAS.

My preferences are set not to get ATLAS tasks (because I've never been able to get them to run successfully even if I sometimes get credit).

The problem is that I keep getting them anyway. I tried letting a couple run but they got to 100% and stayed there for a day so I'm aborting them as soon as I see them. It's still wasting some time though.

What have I done wrong?

Thanks.

This may not be the right place for this question but I'm not sure where that place is.

Anybody know why there are no credits from LHC on BOINCSTATS for 3 days? I'm asking on this site rather than the BOINCSTATS forum because LHC did have the problem for a couple of days in late December when the server was upgraded. It's been 3 days now with the same symptom.

Thanks.

I checked that box when the issue first came up and my credits have been exported since.

Today I see that BOINCSTATS thinks I had 0 credits. I double checked my preferences here and the box is still checked.

It appears I do have some credits due today so I'm wondering if there's a separate problem or if there's something else I need to do regarding the exporting.

Thanks.

I just stumbled upon this new option, while missing 313k Credits. Why was there no boinc message from the lhc team?
I'm not using this forum everyday.

There was and have been sent to your BOINC Manager Notices: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=4901&postid=37586

No message about having to change anything in the prefs.
Go to the thread, read the first message, nothing in it apart from the server upgrade, so no action taken.

Important things should be posted in a way that makes the users understand if they have to take any action.
Thanks a lot.

... and what percentage of users ever go to the message board or even read the notices in the Manager?

Something like this I think should go out as an email to all registered users. I haven't seen any project do that for this issue yet but other projects have done it from time to time for various reasons.

Just a thought.

- Dick
