In addition something went wrong with this version update but nonetheless it would only be the envelope.

Thank you, hadn't seen that.

(The other problem (downloading CMS) was my error.)

My v49 CMS tasks were consistently crashing recently, not 100% but a large majority. When I read here that v50 was available I aborted all the v49's in my queue, but they were replaced by more of the same. I then changed my preferences to exclude CMS tasks (temporarily), aborted the new V49's I'd been sent, and updated again. What I got was more CMS v49 tasks.

3 questions:

1) How long does it take for preference changes to take effect on the server?

2) When can I expect to be able to download v50 tasks to see if that helps?

3) ... or, is there something else stupid I'm doing wrong.

Thanks.

Thanks, Jim.

I went a step further. I just detached from everything and let current tasks die. I uninstalled BOINC and then deleted all BOINC directories. I then re-installed and re-attached to BOINCSTATS and let it rip.

It immediately got one Sixtrack but nothing else. I then turned Sixtrack off, waited a few minutes, and updated. Nothing. Turned Sixtrack back on, waited a few, and updated again and then got CMS and Theory.

This is clearly beyond my ken. Thanks for your response. That got me on the right track.

One of my machines (https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/show_host_detail.php?hostid=10509223) has been unable to get any new work for any subproject for weeks now.

This began after I got it back from HP for repair and they replaced the motherboard. Initially it got work (or maybe still had the work from before, not sure) but it immediately got a slew of errors because HP doesn't enable virtualization by default. Fixed that and since then can't get anything, not even Sixtrack. The message I get is the usual:

--- LHC@home | Not requesting tasks: don't need (CPU: not highest priority project; NVIDIA GPU: GPUs not usable; Intel GPU: GPUs not usable)

My priority for LHC is as high as I can make it but just in case I tested it by suspending all other projects. Still no work.

I am getting work on other machines.

I figure I've done something stupid but I can't figure it out. Any help greatly appreciated. Just please don't LOL if it's as dumb a mistake as I suspect. :-)

Export stats works but not updated. Files are from 2019-07-21 but process not started after reboot of server.

Could we have a check on this?

Stats exports (at least BOINCSTATS) are working again. Thank you to whomever is responsible for getting it going. It's appreciated.

Bump!

I know and understand that issues like this are (obviously) not critical to the science but many of your volunteers like to see it. if it can't be taken care of right away, please let us know what the issue is and / or when you expect to be able to address it. No news is really not good news.

Thanks, Jim. I turned the no work option off and I'll see what happens.

I left it set that way (i.e. accept others if no work) because I'd never noticed Theory and LHCb having no work between them but I see now that the total unsent is pretty low so I'll guess that's what happened.

Hi,

If this is in the wrong place I apologize, but it seems like more of a BOINC or LHC system problem than ATLAS.

My preferences are set not to get ATLAS tasks (because I've never been able to get them to run successfully even if I sometimes get credit).

The problem is that I keep getting them anyway. I tried letting a couple run but they got to 100% and stayed there for a day so I'm aborting them as soon as I see them. It's still wasting some time though.

What have I done wrong?

Thanks.

This may not be the right place for this question but I'm not sure where that place is.

Anybody know why there are no credits from LHC on BOINCSTATS for 3 days? I'm asking on this site rather than the BOINCSTATS forum because LHC did have the problem for a couple of days in late December when the server was upgraded. It's been 3 days now with the same symptom.

Thanks.

I checked that box when the issue first came up and my credits have been exported since.

Today I see that BOINCSTATS thinks I had 0 credits. I double checked my preferences here and the box is still checked.

It appears I do have some credits due today so I'm wondering if there's a separate problem or if there's something else I need to do regarding the exporting.

Thanks.

We are disabling the required consent to export statistics for now, and have raised an issue to include a link to the terms of use on the project preference page in the upstream BOINC code.

I just stumbled upon this new option, while missing 313k Credits. Why was there no boinc message from the lhc team?
I'm not using this forum everyday.

There was and have been sent to your BOINC Manager Notices: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/forum_thread.php?id=4901&postid=37586

No message about having to change anything in the prefs.
Go to the thread, read the first message, nothing in it apart from the server upgrade, so no action taken.

Important things should be posted in a way that makes the users understand if they have to take any action.
Thanks a lot.

... and what percentage of users ever go to the message board or even read the notices in the Manager?

Something like this I think should go out as an email to all registered users. I haven't seen any project do that for this issue yet but other projects have done it from time to time for various reasons.

Just a thought.

I assume they are the 217 people that have chosen to publish there statistics.

Yup, but the vast majority (I'm guessing but I'm willing to wager!) of the other 8,669 are those who did not know there was a choice to be made. :-)

Not blaming LHC for this. It's my favorite project and I understand you (not of course meaning "you" personally, Toby) gotta do what you gotta do. It seems though that overall BOINC stats may be entering a new era, one in which they are extremely incomplete.

I wonder if non-EU based projects will need to comply with this. I'm currently running 45 projects (of which maybe half a dozen may not be active and I should prune). I went through all of them and it appears that only LHC, LHC-dev, Einstein, and WUProp have the GDPR (aggregation site export) option in their preferences.

I find this regulation strange in that it doesn't seem to prevent aggregation sites like BOINCSTATS or anybody else from accessing the data since it's available here for all of us to see. It just makes it harder, especially across a gazillion projects. Anybody who wants the data for some nefarious reason could get it so there's really no privacy issue.

Oh well. Life goes on but BOINC, without good stats, won't be quite what it has been. PITA. Sigh.

Edit: Albert too which figures but it wasn't up earlier.
Also WCG but that one is opt out so it hasn't had a large effect.

With LHC tasks the monitoring is itself a problem. They're not like other projects' tasks. Here "verified" doesn't always mean a successful result. With ATLAS, for example, you can spend thousands of hours crunching and have every result verify and think you've done a ton of useful work and then discover that in spite of the tasks verifying they did not return a HITS file and therefore did nothing but waste electricity. So monitor but do remember you sometimes need to look beyond what it says in the Status column in your results list.

I knew that ATLAS could return a worthless "valid" result and (with your help) learned how to check them. I've stopped running ATLAS until I have more time to work on it.

I didn't know that the other virtual projects also could do that. Can you tell me how I can check them more thoroughly? Is that also done through PanDa?

Not sure. It depends on what your "other purposes" are. You haven't mentioned it and nobody has asked. It might make more sense to just forget about any LHC VBox app and just do Sixtrack and other projects' apps that can handle being suspended.

In the end it's your decision, your power bill and your CPU time so it only has to make sense to you.

By "other purposes" I just meant that I use this device during the day for other things, browsing, spreadsheets, etc. I just need the make the performance not too clunky. That's why I'm attacking this as a fine tuning task. (I have another machine that's beefier and I run 6Track on it but I've never been able to get it to run anything virtual. Another project for the mythical day when there's more time.)

As for "sense", i was looking to see if I so clearly was misunderstanding technical aspects that I was making no sense in that respect.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to educate me.

Thanks, Bronco.

Yup, got it. I didn't respond in sufficient detail. I wasn't planning to turn on "Suspend if computer is in use". I was thinking about the "GPU computing" (and maybe the "computer is on battery", but that's a different issue).

AiUI BOINC doesn't use a GPU I figured I could turn that one on with no ill effects and I'm pretty sure it will help system performance I figure to try it and monitor it.

If that works I may also try and test the battery suspend. That won't affect performance, but the machine is rarely on battery so while there may stop & resume from time from time, it won't happen frequently, probably less than once / week. On those occasions though it would be better to have BOINC quiesced if possible.

I know that Toby gave me a performance work around too, changing the "Use at most..." (CPU time I presume), but I'd to see how high I can keep that and still have the machine functional for other purposes. I wish it were a dedicated box, it just isn't. I've experimented with the GPU use in the past and it seemed to make a difference. The plan is to try it and monitor it to make sure it doesn't cause problems.

That make sense?

Mechanic, I have my settings the same as yours except that the Use at Most CPU is at 90%. I may have to lower that further but my goal is to let it rip as much as possible and that's why I'll experiment test with the GPU suspension.

Thanks,

- Dick

That seems to have done the trick, Toby. I'll experiment with the setting and find which one(s) cause the problem. My best guess is the "computer in use" option.

One more question. Was there any kind of a change in the operation of these tasks somewhere around 9/20? That's when these errors seem to have begun. Of course it's possible I fiddled with something that caused it even though I don't remember doing so. Just curious. the fact that others haven't reported this (that i've seen) probably indicates I'm guilty.

Thanks again for your help.
