OK, I finally thought of a good reply to:
OJ is innocent this time too.

The truth is, OJ's lawyers planted evidence against OJ in order to frame the Police for "framing" OJ. I do, of course, have evidence to prove my accusation which I will not disclose here. I'm already at risk; OJ's lawyers may accuse me of framing them for framing the Police. If they do, demonstrative evidence against me will emerge. At that point, I'm sure you know what I'll say... "They framed me!"

Come on, it's probably just a few lines of code.

Nope. It's 0 lines of code to touch. It's just an extra module they have to install, which depending how they have PHP installed in the first place, could be really easy.
Why did it work just fine before the "New Look" changes?

I think it's such a good idea, I've decided not to eat any of the food in the kitchen until my wife does the shopping next week. That way, I will lose weight and when I finally do eat there will be lots of food to throw away and that makes me feel like a prosperous American. I love this country so much.

You could, but it won't help much. Mostly, getting work is about timing; your computer has to be sitting at the LHC "slot machine" at just the right time to hear the ch-ching ch-ching ch-cha-ching!

Also, I've discovered that if I put LHC at 100 and everything else at 1, my machine still stocks up on other work and stops polling the LHC server for a day or two (and even putting LHC at 1500 and all others at 1 or 2 or 3 doesn't help.)

I snagged a dozen WU's from this last batch, but each one only lasts 30 min or so. It's kind of a game, but I'll keep playing as long as it's fun!

FWIW -- I don't think this is a "new" issue, it seems like this condition has existed for some time. Short of you "detaching" your computer from the project, then re-attaching with your friend's account, I'm not sure there's a way to do what you desire ...

All my friend wants to do is log into his LHC account using my browser (to, for instance, post to the message boards.) The post by Ananas makes this correct assumption and also makes some good points. Incidentally, I've recently discovered that this is not a problem when using Mozilla Firefox.

As for the forum prefs problem, here is the error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function gd_info() in /srv/httpd/lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/html/inc/image.inc on line 7

Hi me again.

Just thought I'd tell you that I actually got another W/U last night over my dialup and finished it this morning. I admit I was rather surprised to receive one on 7/24 seeing as how Neason and company told us that there were 20000 work units which were made available on 7/20 and I didn't expect to get any at all.
That was lucky, because the 7/24 run only had a few K WUs. I had dial-up until recently, so I share your joy!

Like I said before: be persistent and even dilaup users can get work.
Aye! ...and with some luck, there will lots of work to do in the near future; then dial-up users will get work on a more regular basis.

Cheers
Tom

33) Message boards : Cafe LHC : Finally: The truth about NEZ (Message 17498)
Posted 22 Jul 2007 by Daxa
Post:
I heard that NEZ is homosexual. The problem is, no one knows what sex NEZ is to begin with. This adds great confusion to the issue and makes the rumor mostly pointless.

I've also heard that "NEZ" is an acronym. The problem is, no one knows what it's an acronym for... Any ideas?

Finally, it is said that NEZ keeps a bottle of vodka in the freezer and always pours about 15 ml into each beer to increase the alcohol content. However, I only heard this from one guy, and he does the same thing with his beer.

If anyone knows any other facts (or even rumors) about NEZ, please post.

35) Message boards : Number crunching : The beautiful screensaver (Message 17460)
Posted 20 Jul 2007 by Daxa
Post:
From all projects that I'm crunching, I think the LHC screensaver is by far the nicest. Is there an option to use it as a normal screensaver? I know it will be in a modified version, since it is in some way linked to the data being crunched. I'm just wondering if such a version exists.

There are various ways to "trick out" the LHC screen saver so that it runs without an active WU, but they vary widely in terms of platforms and consistency. I used to have a somewhat-reliable method I was using on Win XP, but it was a pain in the butt to get it working. I've since forgotten what the trick was.

So the easy answer to your question is that there is no easy answer.

I don't suppose anyone has ideas about the need to login everytime? I still have to enter my email and password eaach time I power up my PC but this is the only Project I have to do that for - I didn't need to do it before the redesign.

I'm not having that problem; my account stays logged in even after re-starting the computer. However, I'm using ie7 on Win XP -- other configurations my react differently to the redesign.

By the way, Ray, how does one go about winning a "Certified" award like yours and HG's? I've wondered this for a long time! I would like to run for "Certified Big Mouth" or something. Any info would be much appreciated.

Some in here seem to feel that since they are so willing to be generous with their time and systems to do the crunching, they then have the right to go on and on about problems and changes they want to see...
Isn't that (at least partly) what this forum is for though?
They have long past the point of constructive criticism.
Unfortunately it is quite difficult to be constructive when there is (almost) no dialogue. Still, the comments I have seen here seem (to me) to have the aim of improving this project rather than trying to run it down.

I agree. And for those who disagree, they should accept that the forums are an appropriate place to blow off steam. Sure, I rant pointlessly all the time... it gives me something to do when there's no work. There's no harm in being hyper-passionate about a project.
