I had the same issue starting with LHC@Home. There are options depending on your CPU manufacturer to enable VT-X

1. AMD - Go to BIOS and CPU Configuration and enable SVM
2. Intel - Same as above, but enable Virtualisation (it isn't called SVM, it is called "Intel Virtualization"). You will get the option (on ASUS motherboards anyway) to enable VT-X or VT-D

When you reboot, there may be a black screen for a bit longer than usual. This is perfectly OK, do not worry and just wait it out.

On Ubuntu, you can then install VirtualBox from the standard repositories, it will just work. You cannot see the virtual machines being created without additional tools, but if you run top or htop, you will easily see that virtualbox is working overtime on ATLAS or CMS tasks.
