1) Message boards : LHC@home Science : The Dimension of Feeling (Message 15635)

Post:
I don't want to burst anyone's bubble (well, actually I do) but the "dimension of feelings" is not beyond math and physics.

I studied psychology and if more people would take that branch of science as a serious science we would have less of these discussions. Thanks to neuropsychology, we know that feelings are the results of biochemical reactions in the brain.

I'd invite all of you to read at least about the limbic system to grasp some of the basic notions.

As a computer can produce complex and wonderful things on a monitor while still using only 1s ans 0s, the human "computer" can have a variety of complex experiences while using "basic" chemical reactions.

Also of interest is the fact that emotions have been scientifically studied in other animals. After seeing that monkeys have a sense of justice, morality and that they also feel empathy for others, humans can't be seriously considered as superior to other animals. Our only "superior" ability is to make complex gadgets.

Of course you can still chose to believe in a god, but what is interesting is that with each new discovery since the beginning of time, god has lost some of his power.

All the cool kids will want one !

Omg... black holes can be eletrically charged ?

Bubbles of nothingness ??

Missing space time pieces ???

What has this world come to !

:O

I'll defenitely have to read more on that

Thanks

Ok from what I know about black holes (which is about nothing), I would say that the tiny black holes would still attract matter and then slowly grow up, no ?

LOL omg god this is the funniest thing I've heard in the last few days lol

we need more lively posts like these in here. The boards are dying !

Save the boards ?

Well I must be really bad at this because I can't find it on the frontpage.

I'm talking about http://public.web.cern.ch/Public/Welcome.html of course.

But maybe I'm the exception :)

Greetings,

Well I was surfing the web to learn more about the LHC and CERN and I found out that on the CERN website nothing was said about lhc@home.

Even worse was that they were offering a "cool" screensaver that didn't even "wow" me instead of also suggesting to help science make new discoveries by helping with the lhc screensaver.

So is it me or is there a certain lack of information given to the public ?

I never had that probem before and I don't know how to react.

Yesterday is froze at around 26% and I had to reset the project, wasting around 25 wus.

Today it did it again and I feel like this is not normal. Are the latest wus unstable or something ?

It's strange because I came to this project 2 weeks ago without being that interested in it. The only thing that mattered was that it was the most concrete project from my point of view (compared to SETI[waste of time], climate prediction [results not really bringing anthing useful], Folding [too abstract], etc etc etc).

Here I came to realise that maybe we were not searching for a cure for sida or something like that but at least we were doing something REAL.

I hope other concrete science project (perhaps space engineering projects or stuff like that) will one day use this technology.

When the accelerator will be complete, at least I'll be able to say "hey, It's a little bit thanks to me you know"

Keep up the good work guys !

As for my fellow crunchers, keep crunching !

I make a toast :

For Science !

I have LHC

I set lhc to 10 000 and seti to 1 (work %)

I attached to seti

I merged my old seti account with my current lhc account

I detached form Seti

LHC is still paused even though there is no other project

How do I unpause it ?

Ah right, that's what I was suspecting...

But sometimes researches are funded in the hope of using the knowledge to build new devices (especially military gadgets)

I just wanted to see where this was all going.

Now are we giving computer time for a for-profit organisation ?

How fascinating !

Our perceptions are so limited then and what I find more than incredible is that humans are using their brain trying to think "outside the box" to understand things that are beyond their perceptual reach.

What is even more fascinating is that this is exactly what I'm studying right now in one of my classes (studying in psychology).

Humans...such incredible critters :P

yup that's what I always tought. Both one and two.

Anyway I found your reply quite interesting so don't excuse yourself for the lenght ! ;)

But you raised good points as to wether the big bang would still continu to "produce" mass or not.

But if it was so, wouldn't it be detectable by our long range infra red telescopes due to the massive heat it would produce ?

1) About that dark matter theory, some physicists at nasa may have found something that will render this theory obsolete. Simply put, the laws of gravity wouldn't behave like we thought they would at long range.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2002/02/10/wnasa10.xml&sShe%20et=/news/2002/02/10/ixworld.html

This would remove the need for dark mass to maintain galaxies together.

2) About that big bang theorie... I always thought that there was infinite emptiness and that the big band was a big blob of energy hovering in it that exploded... Are you saying that the universe is expanding as in the limits of the existence are expanding or as in the matter is taking more and more space in it (as I thought) ?

Hey all !

Even though I find life sciences to be more important, it's always fun to help discover how our world is made so I joined you recently ! :P

Anyhow, will this particle accelerator help in the study of the other hypothetical dimensions ?

I'm taling about parallele dimensions and all that stuff.
