There's a lot posted in the "about the science" thread, also the "communication" thread, and more sixtrack project explanations linked from the main page and also in the posts mentioned.

The "communications" thread is a little dated, but I don't think the goals have changed much. The discovery of the [possibly? probably?] Higgs boson has dramatically changed the public's perception of LHC and has focused their efforts on verification and followup. Sixtrack relates to the stability of the collider, and contributes operationally and also in design of enhancements for the LHC hardware if I understand it right. Their new project, test4theory, simulates the collisions. I would expect the nature of workunits to change more in that project, although I believe the changes would be gradual.
