I have my linux machine attached to a few projects that have no linux apps.
they usualy get a message like "unknown platform linux_gnu_i686"

I sometimes tried to install some projects on my machine which hadn't a Mac app and I always got an error message,I don't remember what they were. Nothing of the kind happened with LHC ...

Anyway, I detached.

So, I'm waving you good bye ... :(

LHC has no MacOS application. :-/

How is it that I managed to install it in my BOINC manager then ?

Hi,

I received this message from the server :

Sam 25 nov 09:13:43 2006|lhcathome|Message from server: (there was work for other platforms)

I guess this means that there's no work for my Apple and that's why I'm feeling uneasy.

If this continue I will abandon the project.

Hi,

I know that I could read this somewhere on these pages, but I'd prefer that the explanations I need come out of discussions.

I hope that you won't mind me putting this that way ... :)

So, what exactly are we doing by crunching these data we are sent ?

Please, English not being my mother tongue, I would be very grateful if you used plain English, thank you ! :)

As thread creator, I get to go first :)

The three large projects I'd each rate as no 1 (each for different reasons) are Einstein (most interesting science), Rosetta (project most friendly to participants)

I joined "Rosetta" yesterday. They sent me work on the spot ! :)

and CPDN (project needed most urgently by humankind).

Unfortunately, CPDN and the other BBC projects need powerful computers and are not compatible with Macintosh machines ... :(((

Well, in fact I tried to get back some time ago but the new server was not ready and it wasn't impossible to get to the project.

All right, this time I won't detach. I joined several other projects in July : Seti@Home, Seti&Home Beta Test, Einstein@Home. So my computer is not lazy ! :)

I'll take a look at some other projects but I must pay attention because of them are not compatible with Mactintosh computers ... :(

Hello,

I'm not really a newcomer since I joined this project in July but, due to the fact that there was no work to be done at that time, I detached.

I just re-joined. Is there more work these time ? The project didn't send me wus ... :(

Thanks !

Here I am, the newcomer!
... :)

welcome back Anne.

I am afraid your timing is very unlucky - we just had two weeks with a fair number of wu, and back to nothing again.

But please don't detach - the only way to be sure of getting some next time is to keep trying. Set up one or two other projects, keep LHC as well, and your box(es) will keep running your other projects till we get wu here.

More info here.

R~~

No work here - it's true.

LHC@Home is currently ina quiet phase. Studies aredone in batches, the resukts analysed, then more studies. At present the studies are quite small: a batch of work will run out in minutes, and take a week or two to crunch.

If the nature of the project interests you then stick with it and expect only sporadic work. If it's regular work you want, look elsewhere.

Oh - and there's no SysAdmin on the project right now, so problems take a long time to fix, if they get fixed at all.

"The LHC

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator which is being built at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. When it will switch on in 2007, it will be the most powerful instrument ever built to investigate on particles proprieties.

The LHC will take the place of CERN's Large Electron Positron (LEP) collider, and will sit in its 27 Km long tunnel, about 100m underground. It will accelerate 2 separate beams of protons up to an energy of 7 TeV , and then bring them into head-on collisions (from here the name "collider"). The protons collision energy will then be of 14 TeV. But the LHC will not be limited to the study of proton-proton collisions as it can also collide heavy ions, such as lead, with a collision energy of 1148 TeV. ..."

Of course I'm interested in the project !

Thank you for the quick answer and the explanations ! I feel less uneasy now that I know how things are going !

Hello !

I just joined this project and I haven't received any work yet. Is this normal ? How can I be sure that I didn't make a mistake ?

I subscribed to two other projects and they sent me work on the spot. (SETI@Home and Einstein@Home)

Thank you !

Hi Anne !
And Vive La France!!!

LHC is out of work at the moment.......WUs are released but not very often.
Stay attached to the project, because situation may improve!

Thank you for the quick answer ... and the cheers ! :)

I'm interested in this project so I'll stay attached to it and wait ... I got an answer from the server saying that I should try at 10 pm (Paris time).

Anne
P.S. : I tried to create my profile but it failed two times ...
