National Geographic Article
(Message 19141)
Posted 2 Mar 2008 by tenfiveoh Post: National Geographic ran a decent article this month on the LHC. It's not very technical, but very positive. There are some nice photos particularly of the ATLAS collector. You check it out also at ngm.com |

Download and computation errors on 4.67
(Message 7223)
Posted 26 Apr 2005 by tenfiveoh Post: Ever since updating to sixtrack 4.67 (Windows) CC 4.25. I've not had a single successful work unit. Half fail during download & the rest when starting computation. Locks up my machine
(Message 6509)
Posted 8 Mar 2005 by tenfiveoh Post: For about a week or so now LHC has been locking up my machine at least daily. I am running CC 4.19, LHC@ 4.64, on win XP home SP1. I run it in the background, no screensaver. My machine will complete freeze still displaying the desktop. The only way to restart is to unplug the whole box. |

(Message 6062)
Posted 24 Feb 2005 by tenfiveoh Post: Sixtrack v4.64 is available. If you reset the project it should dump your 4.63 work units and then download 4.64. |

LHC official status report
(Message 5068)
Posted 10 Nov 2004 by tenfiveoh Post: > I hope other concrete science project (perhaps space engineering projects or > stuff like that) will one day use this technology. > > When the accelerator will be complete, at least I'll be able to say "hey, > It's a little bit thanks to me you know" > > Keep up the good work guys ! > > As for my fellow crunchers, keep crunching ! > > I make a toast : > > For Science ! > Finally, someone with the right perspective. If you read enough posts on enough project websites it seems all anyone talks about is credit and every little server hiccup. And by "talk" I really mean complain. The point of participating in a DC project is to offer help to the researchers. It's more tangible than just donating money. A chance for the little guy to dip his hand in science. The end result is what's important. Most people run more than one project so you as a user should never have down time. And BTW this project keeps in touch with it's participants much better than some of the others out there. Also check out this link for other projects to keep your CPU busy. www.aspenleaf.com/distributed/distrib-projects.html |

What's up with long winded WU crunches....?

A tunescan wu at 1,000,000 turns takes my machine 7-8 hrs where the others average 36 minutes. |

What is the difference between proeight/pronine/protwelve WUs?
(Message 4081)
Posted 22 Oct 2004 by tenfiveoh Post: From what I gather, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference between the types of work units to us other than how many loops the beam makes. The folks creating the work units label them to identify for themselves which type of run, what parameters are changed, etc. A similar question was posed in this thread http://lhcathome.cern.ch/forum_thread.php?id=531 |

LHC has Setiates ... !!!
(Message 3979)
Posted 18 Oct 2004 by tenfiveoh Post: During LHC downtimes here's another particle accelerator design project you can try out at http://stephenbrooks.org/muon1/ There's no downtime, no work units to download, requires basically no babysitting, but still leaves room for plenty of manual parameter manipulation for those who like to tweek. |
