Okay, finally i got it working :-)

My mistake was to believe that BOINC manager would connect itself to the client, but with CentOS you have to do this manually.
I was not aware of that, because in every other OS i tried the BOINC manager did this automatically.
I successfully connected to LHC project now...let's see what other problems occur :-)

Greetings, djoser

Gives me the same error message.

Interestingly command "systemctl status boinc-client.service" gives me:

boinc-client.service - Berkeley Open Infrastructure Network Computing Client
Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/boinc-client.service; enabled; vendo>
Active: active (running) since Fri 2020-07-10 20:20:33 CEST; 15min ago
Docs: man:boinc(1)
Main PID: 1425 (boinc)
Tasks: 2 (limit: 46092)
Memory: 29.3M
CGroup: /system.slice/boinc-client.service
└─1425 /usr/bin/boinc

I can see it now it the taskmanager, but manager does not connect to it.

Hello and thanks for your answer!

you then need to do something like a "system boinc-client start" or systemctl equivalent to actually start it.

This is what i did and meant by "trying to start BOINC client manually". That didn't work, probably because of the "missing" file you mentioned. The deamon was not to be found in taskmanager.

Hello everyone!
I was curious about CentOS and installed the latest build 8.2-2004 on one of my backup machines.
I never used CentOS before, so i'm a noob regarding this OS.

Now i'm running into problems with the BOINC manager which does not connect to localhost.

I did the following steps to install BOINC on a fresh OS installation:

Installation of CVMFS for native applications:
sudo yum install https://ecsft.cern.ch/dist/cvmfs/cvmfs-release/cvmfs-release-latest.noarch.rpm
sudo yum install -y cvmfs
sudo cvmfs_config setup
sudo wget https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/download/default.local -O /etc/cvmfs/default.local
sudo cvmfs_config reload
cvmfs_config probe

Installation of BOINC client and manager:
sudo yum install https://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/epel-release-latest-8.noarch.rpm
sudo dnf config-manager --set-enabled PowerTools
sudo yum install boinc-client boinc-manager

This installed CVMFS (2.7.3) and BOINC 7.16.6. No problems up to here.
When i now start the BOINC manager it tells me "not connected" (to localhost).
I already tried to start the BOINC client manually and afterwards the manager, but i was out of luck so far.

Anyone here who can explain how to get BOINC working?
Thanks in advance and regards,
djoser

I have nothing but failing tasks since yesterday evening.

It seems that there was a glitch on my machine. After a reboot things are back to normal. All-clear.

You could drop that it won't work. I got same as you and CERN need to build for 20.04 to make it work.

By the way: CVMFS for Focal (20.04) is available now!

stderr-output:
process exited with code 195 (0xc3, -61)
Probing /cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch... Failed!
cvmfs_config probe failed, aborting the job

Furthermore i have 2 tasks which ran abnormally long and failed:

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=279390878

The latter is still running, but will doubtlessly fail...

Does no-one from the experts here have any idea what's going wrong?

I'm not really sure that they are aware of the current situation.
Normally when things go wrong David Cameron informs us what's going on pretty fast.
The problems occured Thursday and since then there is not a single word from the experts or official moderators.

In addition to the validating errors on ATLAS i have now troubles getting other LHC workunits.

BOINC tells me:

Uploading results seems to be fine.

Since 2 hours i get nothing but validation errors on ATLAS native tasks!!

The problem seems to be:

There are a lot of other hosts out there with failing tasks!

since a few days, CMS seems to work fine again. So why not trying CMS :-)

Sorry, i forgot about CMS, because i don't use Virtualbox. Only native applications or SixTrack...
But i hope ATLAS tasks will be back soon, since it's my favourite project.

Indeed, it is. A very rare occasion.
SixTrack has a lot of WUs at the moment. Why not crunching those until ATLAS tasks return!?
Theory has tasks, too.

Things are getting worse.
This is a result of a task running on a machine that worked flawlessly for over 9 months now:

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=273695262

On that same machine the cpu efficiency went down from 0.96 to 0.6.

I already downgraded to 18.04.
Now i'm running into serious problems with cvmfs, see here:

https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=273707970

Also all my jobs are running much longer and CPU efficiency dropped significantly, that's network related i'm almost sure (cvmfs connections to CERN).

Here is another example from a different task:

[2020-05-17 12:43:01] Checking for CVMFS
[2020-05-17 12:43:06] Probing /cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch... OK
[2020-05-17 12:43:15] Probing /cvmfs/atlas-condb.cern.ch... OK
[2020-05-17 12:58:05] Probing /cvmfs/grid.cern.ch... OK

15 minutes for a response.

Console command 'cvmfs_config probe' has the same problem.

I just restartet my whole network and internet infrastructure, just in case it's ISP related.

BTW: I don't have any trouble downloading new tasks either, they come as fast as usual.

There seem to be a general network problem.
Look at the timecodes from one of my Atlas native tasks:

[2020-05-17 12:01:36] Probing /cvmfs/atlas.cern.ch... OK
[2020-05-17 12:14:17] Probing /cvmfs/atlas-condb.cern.ch... OK

Nearly 14 minutes no response...

I also notice that current tasks seems to be interrupted while working and therefore take longer overall.
