1) Message boards : ATLAS application : Bad WUs? (Message 45757)

I am wondering that while it is known since this morning that there obviously is a batch with faulty WUs, no steps have been taken to get those removed or stopped.

I keep getting WUs which fail with all kinds of error reasons.
This one here now failed after 6 minutes: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=334540111

so something seems to go rather wrong with ATLAS presently.

What you can testing, Boinc have a upgrade only for Windows, from 7.16.11 to 7.16.20,
if this faulty Atlas are involved.
Have also upgrated Virtualbox to 6.1.30.
Saw also some faulty before in Win10pro and Win11pro.
okay, I could try this, thanks for the hint.

What I am also seeing now are tasks that are faulty in a different way than before: they do use full CPU power (in contrast to the faulty tasks from before), but the VM console shows zero events processed, all the time long the task is running.

I have some also. Here's one: https://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=334410656 Probably more to come later.
okay, I see. So most probably misonfigured WUs, and no reason for me to be afraid that something's wrong with my system.

The bad thing thoug is that such a bad WU would run for hours and hours, overnight, ... thus blocking a slot for nothing.

within the past few hours, a had several task in a row, where CPU usage was less than 1 minute, but the task was running forever.
See here:

if I interpret the stderr correctly, the problem was

has anyone else made same experience?
7) Message boards : ATLAS application : Tasks download 1.9 GB EVNT files (Message 45702)
Posted 20 days ago by Erich56
Post:
Same for me (1.12 GB) on native ATLAS. That is no problem on the file transfers, but it makes the project folder 46.5 GB.
I have plenty free on a 500 GB SSD, but it could be an unexpected problem for some.
Jim, you say it. I am running BOINC on a 32GB Ramdisk, so it makes a difference.
Not only that with the 1.12GB download file, the subsequent file "ATLAS.root_0" in the slot directory is same size (i.e. 1.12GB), but also the vm_image.vdi is almost 1GB larger.
So yesterday, when I noticed too late that 1.12 GB files were downloaded instead of 243 MB files, with the consequences mentioned above my system crashed after a while, due to lack of disk space :-(

So, I changed the setting (number of tasks running concurrently, plus number of CPU cores per task) - and since last night, the download files have changed back to 243 MB.
I bet they will change to 1.12 GB by tomorrow :-)

This issue is mostly caused by other hypervisors, e.g. Hyper-V, being active beside VirtualBox.
You will have to completely disable all of them and reboot the computer.

you wrote:

In the System Information app, under System Summary, it shows:
"A hypervisor has been detected. Features required for Hyper-V will not be displayed."
Doug

so from what I guess: the hypervisor may be the problem.

I did this now. In one case, it helped. In the next case, BOINC tells me that 2,52MB (!) more disk space is needed. How crazy :-(

You should check what values you have set in Boinc Manager how much disk Boinc is allowed to use and how much it should leave free.
thanks for the hint. The only box in which I set a check from beginning on is: "don't use more than ...% of total". And the value I chose is 98%.
So, in theory, I could increase it to 100%, which in a few cases could help.

Since I have been running ATLAS on a 32GB Ramdisk, I have made the experience that download of tasks beyond a certain number is not possible; the BOINC event log always tells that so and so much more disk space is needed.

Example: free space on the Ramdisk: 9.7GB; when pushing the "update" botton for retrieving another task, BOINC says that it needs 383.85 more disk space. This seems totally unlogical to me, since the vm_image.vdi is about 3.2GB. So, how come that 9.7GB free disk space is not enough?
Does anyone have an explanation why this is happening?
20) Message boards : CMS Application : getting 'Error while computing' for CMS tasks (Message 45631)

Post:
I do not have any extension packs configured for use. Do I need to configure that? I've previously read that the vBox extension pack was not needed. Is that incorrect? .
well, you don't need to install the extension pack necessarily. Virtual Box also runs without the extension pack. However, the extension pack gives you the chance to "look inside" a VM task while running, thus giving you some more information.
There is no need to configure the extension pack. Just install it. From then on, in the BOINC manager, on the left hand side, the button "show VM console" is no longer greyed out, and you can click on it.
Once opened, with the keys F1, F2 and F3 you can retrieve various information about the running task. What exactly you see, varies between the sub-tasks. So in ATLAS you see different things than in Theory and in CMS. Find out yourself, it's pretty interesting and informative.
