21) Message boards : LHC@home Science : Is Everything Made of Mini Black Holes? (Message 21392)

Post:
On PhysOrg I was just struck by a very fascinating headline:

http://www.physorg.com/news161857121.html

In trying to understand how gravity behaves on the quantum scale, physicists have developed a model that has an interesting implication: mini black holes could be everywhere, and all particles might be made of various forms of black holes.

The scientists, Donald Coyne from UC Santa Cruz (now deceased) and D. C. Cheng from the Almaden Research Center near San Jose, are cautious about the idea, but say that it\'s worth investigating with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and other high energy physics experiments. Cruz and Cheng have presented their idea in a study posted on arxiv.org, \"A Scenario for Strong Gravity in Particle Physics: An alternative mechanism for black holes to appear at accelerator experiments.\"

The full article can be downloaded at
http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/0905/0905.1667.pdf
but this is just heavy to read.
The basic ideas are just simple. I like them more than the string theories even if they are compatible.
This LHC could be a real wonder machine.

Ihave the same problem with my last 3 runs under Windows XP Pro SP3 with BOINC 6.4.5. Never had this problem before, even not on climateprediction what takes much more disk space.

Just found on The Times Homepage:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article4744329.ece
\\\'Hackers have broken into one of the computer networks of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

A group calling itself the Greek Security Team left a rogue webpage describing the technicians responsible for computer security at the giant atom smasher as “schoolkids” — but reassuring scientists that they did not want to disrupt the experiment.\\\'

Does this touch LHC@home ?

In my case, I simply closed the running BOINC manager program, and executed the downloaded installer for version 5.10.45. This didn\\\'t wipe out any of the work units I had. I suppose that any finished work units should be reported first, but both the pending and the running WU\\\'s continued smoothly and without problems on a Vista and XP machine here.

I hope this helps.

No, it doesn\\\'t. I have WUs from climateprediction.net which will finish in the beginning of 2009. Could you explain us or give a hint to another expert what is the problem with the BOINC 6 version ? And has the last message I got \\\'Redundant result - Cancelled by server\\\' anything to do with this incompatibility ?
Thanks for further help.

If you want to use 6.2, make sure you\\\'re not asking for work from LHC@home. If you want to crunch for LHC, for now, you must be on 5.10

This is unbelievable ! I had calculated already some WUs up to 3.Sept. using the newest BOINC Version. So where could I get the old version from ? With the last upgrade the directories for all my other BOINC projects were shifted. Is there any de-installation routine which will shift them back to where BOINC 5.10 will expect them ?

My last WUs were:
\'Redundant result - Cancelled by server\'.
Is that the sign of using the wrong BOINC ?
Who is able to correct this towabohu ?
thanks for help

Even if I understand only a small part of it this theory smells like truth for its incredible elegance and simplicity. I have never read such a convincing step. The idea to express Einsteins General Relativity fields in spinor representation is revolutionary and also that this finds place in a beasic representation of E8. It seems to be much more understandable than any string complications.
Remember how revolutionary Einstein was to combine Maxwells 10 equations of elecrtodynamics in just 2 equations. This impressed me very much during my studies of theoretical physics.

Hi, I have some WUs from 2006 in my account list. The eldest is Result Id 7279200, work unit #1412032, sent back 18 Jun 2006 granted 37.58 credits.

My eldest pending credit WU is #1628709, Result Id 8421894, returned 12 Feb 2007, claimed credit 0,00 after 1.63sec CPU time.

you'll always have work (unless the other projects are SIMAP....

SIMAP is now running continuously. Each batchrun brings a lot more of similarities and since more then 1 month there is a continuous workflow.
So this is an autocatalytic knowledge generating process.
Just try and look here:
http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/batchmonitor.php
There are the tasks currently in process displayed.

It is very senseful to have other projects on the line like Einstein@home, climateprediction.net, FightAids@home or QMC@home.
An overwiev how often and how many work units were sent out is found here:

Hi,
We are releasing a Press Release today to officially Launch the LHC@HOME move to the UK. So we might expect some new users to turn up over the weekend! Please be nice to them ;-)

So that they have a fighting chance of getting a job to process we changed some of the settings including the daily quota.

I think thats a very good idea. To have 2 WU a day is more comfortable for me than getting 10 at once and then no more for 6 months.
Currently there is computing power needed at SIMAP: http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/

as well as FightAIDS@home:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewFaahResearch.do

and Einstein@Home:
http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/

So who has idle machines could be very useful contributing to these projects.
Hope this helps

This WU crashed, when I tried to maximize the graphics window in Windows XP. It said something like "Cannot create new surface. This program will exit." or something like that.

This problem is well known and I have had it earlier. I have it too with the graphics of climateprediction.net.

Seems to be a BOINC problem on reservoing enough intermediate RAM storage for big screens. I had not tested it with a smaller screen resolution of 640*480 but I would like to have someone to test it.

Is that a point that will be fixed in the next months or is this just a question of some days ?
