yeah if double precision needed, there is problem ...

CUDA is for single precision IEEE compliant ...

Damn..
I blame google for giving me the wrong answer.

It's actually a good idea to consider GPU computing these days. In 2004, GPU computing would not have been a good fit for this, but today's GPU's now have much better math performance.

A quick google search of 'Nvidia Floating Point' shows results that they now have 128 bit double precision floating point math, which could come in handy.

I don't see them implementing this for Sixtrack because they have yet to get a fortran compiler that would work for Mac computers, let along GPU's.

When I played with boinc on knoppix on my old pc, I used to use Boinctop to see what boinc was running, however it doesn't query the servers.

You might want to check out the boinc bash script addon listed at

Like many of us i have my share of pending workunits.
This workunit is different. The other 4 computers that received it have got credit, my result is still pending.
Is there an explanation for this?

Anne

The average forum user can only speculate:
- The result could be different from other results - there's some extra text on the result page.
"(boinc_init() 4.65
boinc_init() 4.65
boinc_finish(0)"

- it could be the boinc server is borked.

- it could be the boinc client is borked.

If your result is different from the Intel and other AMD results, then one of the admin's might be able to verify that.
Are you running Boinc 4.65?
There's more recent versions at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

It's a rounding issue when displaying something to the website.
0.00166861633556067 shows up as 0.00 when formatted to a web page.

46) Message boards : Number crunching : Maximum daily WU quota per CPU? (Message 18420)
Posted 28 Oct 2007 by Profile Alex
Post:
I think the original use of the quota system was to limit WU's getting trashed by hosts that would crash on running a system that got corrupted.
I remember the early days that a couple of PC's would download a wu, exit with an error, then get a new wu and there was no limit to the number of downloads a bad pc would have. Back then, a single PC could screw up results for hundreds of wu's in a day.

A good setting would be the number of WU's a typical machine can crunch in a day. That number is variable because sometimes there are 100k turn WU's, and sometimes there are 1 million turn WU's.

1. Where is BOINC installed? Vista doesn't like it in the Program files directory. I've got it installed to c:\\boinc and it works fine.

2. Are you manually shutting down BOINC before shutting down the computer? The super speedy shut down Vista does doesn't really give BOINC enough time to do its housekeeping. Registry Hack/Workaround here.

The failed WU's were when I had boinc installed to Program Files.

Yes, I right click on the boinc icon in the bottom right taskbar, and select 'exit', so there goes my computer's quota rating.

For the original poster's issue, he's not running Vista.

Link to the crashed result.

I'm assuming it's this result http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=9340373
"The session was canceled. (0xf0) - exit code 240 (0xf0)"

Myself, my shiny new vista machine is giving errors such as http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/result.php?resultid=9258835
"- exit code 1073807364 (0x40010004)" which is probably a separate issue.

51) Questions and Answers : Windows : Running Boinc on Vista : Cancel or Allow. (Message 18229)
Posted 17 Oct 2007 by Profile Alex
Post:
Old pc died on the weekend, so I got a new machine, which runs Vista.

Boinc installs and adds a shortcut to the startup menu, which Vista does not approve of every time I start my pc.
So.. I removed the shortcut.

Every time I try to start Boinc manually, I get a 'user account control' window which does the Cancel or Allow routine yet again.

When I try to preview the screensaver from the Appearance and Personalisation control panel, it doesn't display a screensaver, nor does it display any generic boinc screensaver either.

Any suggestions on getting past the 'Cancel or Allow' routine, getting the firewall to like Boinc, and getting the screensaver to work as a screensaver rather than just a number cruncher.

Was wondering, are the works sent by @home sites Beowulf compatible?

The last time I checked (2004), OpenMosix was able to run Boinc.
At that time the boinc client felt that there was one big processor, so my two machines only ran one boinc task.

If you look at the result for one of the computers, you will see
Claimed credit 0.00203023874306043

It means that Sixtrack was crunching a work unit which had the particles crash into the wall on startup.

Do you have a second language? (not English or German)

If so, you could help by becoming a translator for one of the BOINC stats sites -

Have a look at the charts and layout.

Didn't Alex just post here in this thread earlier today? I'm sure they're aware of it. Weird that they haven't said anything substantive about it, but I'd bet they're on it.

I'm not the admin. Just a guy with a low numbered user ID.
There's also more than 1 person with 'Alex' as a name on the forums..

Thought it was funny that techically, the servers 'have work'.

Well, that should put an end to the 'this project rarely has work' thread.
Now, it ALWAYS has work.

Thought I'd throw that question out there.

If one of the thousands of magnets fails (ie, has a coolant leak), is the system able to compensate for that change in magnetism?
Does the beam automatically hit the wall and cut through 20 meters of copper in that event?
