I am very lucky in that the parallelism is over particles and every particle is independent. Once I achieve results reproducibility I will be looking at some floating underflows and summation algorthims but right now I just want identical results. Regards. Eric. |

The last few years have been difficult, but I now believe there is a plan in place to repatriate the BOINC servers to CERN itself and to provide scope for additional applications as well as an updated and improved SixTrack service. News should appear on the LHC@home project NEWS. 2010 was a good year for the LHC and it ended with a very successfull run using lead ions instead of protons. In the meantime I have been busy developing SixTrack in order to produce executables with 0 ULP difference in the results using different Fortran compilers, at any optimisation, and on any IEEE 754 compliant platform. This would be a small technical breakthrough, but extremely useful for the portability of SixTrack. It should (at long last) allow the use of an executable for MACs and allow me to start development for GPUs, once a satisfactory service has been established. Thankyou again for your continued support and patience. |

Well, interestingly enough, the madX general purpose accelerator design program kernel PTC is written in Fortran 95 embedded in C++. The planned successor to mad8, mad9, in C++ was never completed successfully. IMHO this was due to the design choices rather than the choice of language. There is no need to be a bigot or a fanatic about this. All my nunerical methods are equally aplicable to C/C++ as well as Fortran. I don\\\'t consider Java; it may have improved ith last ten years but I don\\\'t have time to look (see Goldberg, Kahan, or Wikipedia). C/C++ has the advantage of being well known to the next generation; Fortran is in a high performance niche, and one day I might try and measure any performance difference on some real application. Horses for courses. |

I should be working on the Linux executable, but I thought it vital tp finally give you an update. We now seem to have a working Windows executable with NO graphics. the graphics were unrealistic and wasted CPU. The graphics don\\\'t work I think because we have an old API and a more moder server side. (This because the servers were moved and upgraded without information or consultation.) Just identified a problem with long task names, work unit names, which was also causing failures. We shall avoid long names for the moment. Current plan is to get a Linux executable with a more recent API and if and when that works, to upgrade the Windows executable, and maybe add some very very simple graphics. Even better news is that CERN will now tolerate our work, and even host the servers, and we are hoping to have server side support closer to home. More on this if it comes to pass. In the meantime thanks for your patience and continued support. I would really like to get compiler independence and then a MAC and CUDA executable..............dream on as the first priority must be to get an up to date stable service. |

Time is of the essence and I am actually trying to build a Linux executable before moving on to a more recent API and with some simple graphics displaying progress. The present build for Windoes involves application code generation on Linux, moving it and makefile to Windows via CYGWIN. building the crlibm on cygwin, importing the objects to a Windows .NET (2003Version ONLY..) and then a build. All this on an ancient PC with hardly any memory. For an update on progress I am appending latest status and questions. Status and Questions Monday, 15th March, 2010. The following questions are open: a) Are we submitting the work to all Windows clients? b) Are results being rejected? and if so why? c) In particular why does Emanuele never get any results even though his sixdeskfpopse has been doubled? This is study slhc_ultimate_with_bb_and_corrections_40cm_target10 in his ~elaface/workspace1/sixjobs. His jobs take (mostly) around 1 day on a modern PC and the variable sixdeskfpopse=60000000000000 i.e. 6*10**13. d) How many work units are failing because of the volunteer reported problem with the Windows graphics? e) For Francois and Ben; where is/what happened to pcolrent16??? In the meantime Frank and Massimo are getting results but rather slowly. There are Windows executables for SixTrack (NO graphics) and for SixTrackBNL (NO graphics) in ~boinc/SixTrack. I cannot build any new Windows apps while on vacation (security makes it almost impossible to login to my very very slow machine at CERN). I do have access to lxplus and my desktop Linux at CERN. I have Windows 7 HOME Premium here but this has no Virtual Machine capability. I could download cygwin and then the boinc trunc and try building for Limux with that. The machine is an Athlon but with 32-bit Windows 7. I don\\\\\\\'t fancy that much. I have downloaded the complete BOINC trunc of the \\\\\\\"stable\\\\\\\" code to my Linux PC pcapi98 ate CERN. This is runninmg SLC4 based on RedHat Linux. The system is 32-bit and has kernel version 2.6.9-89.0.16.EL.cern. I feel this might be good enough to be compatible with most of our Linux clients. This system has gcc version 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-11). Looking at usr/lib/gcc/i386-redhat-linux/ it seems I might be able to use 3.2.3 instead. Any advice/help welcome. Another QUESTION: what Linux versions are being used by our lhcathome clients??? So; I shall try and build the lib, boinc_api and boinc_api_fortran on this platform and then make a new Linux executable. My lf95 Fortran compiler is installed for this Linux version anyway, so I believe this might just produce a working Linux executable. Last question; how do I test??? Will crashes due to system call problems be reported? The clients/users are normally extremely helpful and I would assume they would let us know in no uncertain fashion. So, in summary, let us get the production sorted out and get some results for Emanuele (Laface) and I shall continue work on trying to build a Linux executable for i386 and a not too recent kernel. |

I am reallky sorry about this but we are trying something that has never been done before because of the very big CPU time requirement. The time spent in beab-beam interaction computation is clearly very significant and perhaps I shall have to change the sixdeskfpopse=`expr $sixdeskturns \\* $sixdeskparts` times a million algorithm to take account of the type of study.
