If someone really manages it to build such a perpetual motion engine, he must be very afraid of his life, I think.
There is so much money involved that one could save for fuel once such an engine is running, so I'm sure the major oil companies would do their best to prevent such an invention from being publicy accepted, even if it means to kill him.
Also, it's no wonder to me that the state is not interested in it, since they also earn a lot of bucks by the taxes from the oil companies.

So, common sense and what we got to know in school tells us that such an device is impossible to build, because it voids physical priciples, right?
But what, if some of these priciples are erroneous? All physical laws ground on hypothesis and are only "proven" by trying to re-calculate their values and properties by using the laws that have been there before.
There are a lot of antitheses in our physics already, just think about the definition of what light is. For some calculation, it needs to be a wave, for others it needs to be a stream of weight-less particles.

As you may have noticed: English is not my native language so it's no wonder if I sometimes use misleading words to express what I want to say. I apologize for that, I'm not perfect. ;)

I found it a bit cynical to re-use my setence "believe it, or not" for saying the antithetic. If it wasn't ment as side blow, then I misinterpreted it. Sorry for that.

All after all I'm a bit astonished that some of you feel like I tread on your toes. I did not offense anybody here, did I? :-/

Next time I think I should deny myself trying to help if it end up in such alarms and excursions. :-(

Well, I'm not trying to convert any ZA-disciples here. *g* ;)
If ZA runs fine for you, nice, keep it! No need to get cynical here ;)
As I wrote before I'm not saying that ZA is crap, but form my experiences it nearly always turned out that problems like dbernat's one where caused by ZA in some coherence with the related program, even if everything was obviously set up correctly inside of ZA.

Believe it, or not, I've seen way more troubles caused by Zone Alarm than by any other software-firewalls I'm aware of.
Some users suddenly got problems many months after installing Zone Alarm. Suddenly the computer started eating up all available CPU power or they experienced random crashs in programs that take exessive usage of the internet, etc...
I'm not saying that Zone Alarm is a bad software at all, but I know from my experience that by avoiding this piece of software one also avoid running into trouble eventually.

It's not BOINC's guilt. Zone Alarm is well known for causing problems with many other internet-related programs. I always recommend NOT to use it.
If you are looking for a good and free alternative firewall, you should give Kerio a try: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_home.html
Or try Sygate's personal FW: http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm

Hm, just a quick thought about this here...
ATM there are abt. 40,000 workunits left, this amount of work will only last a few days from now on, I think.
But what will happen afterwards? I read somewhere that Cern is thinking about not to continue the BOINC project after these beta-tests and instead use their own "grid-cafe" for the work.
Does anyone here have some facts about this rumour?
Thanks!

>If the long term debt is too low (negative), it won't ask for new work.

So what's the use of sending a request to the scheduler then?
And what's the benefit of this new solution? I can't see any...
I only see that there are two requests sent to the scheduler, most of the time only half a minute separated, where the old 4.19 client only sent one request.

Please have a look at the times:

05/07/2005 18:14:04|LHC@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 1 results
05/07/2005 18:31:29|LHC@home|Requesting 1 seconds of work, returning 0 results

06/07/2005 00:49:11|LHC@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 1 results
06/07/2005 00:49:51|LHC@home|Requesting 15 seconds of work, returning 0 results

And it's always like this with the 4.45 client, the same here.

I think both of you are getting Ian wrong. I think he ment this here when talking about a "waste of time and resources":

06/07/2005 00:49:11|LHC@home|Requesting 0 seconds of work, returning 1 results
06/07/2005 00:49:12|LHC@home|Scheduler request to http://lhcathome-sched1.cern.ch/scheduler/cgi succeeded

You get it? Requesting zero seconds of work is indeed a quite senseless task, even more because the scheduler is asked for more seconds right afterwards. So there are always two requests sent to the scheduler, which IS a waste of resources...

Well, I'm talking about the local downloads page here at LHC@home.
The only links with further instructions I can find there is http://boinc.berkeley.edu/participate.php - The official BIONC pages.
But even there one don't find a single hint that one could run intro trouble trying to update from 4.19...
