21) Questions and Answers : Getting started : When I power on BOINC in the VM I get an error message (Message 37788)

The message is only on screen briefly, but I think the first line says something about 'NETWORK DISCOVERY SERVICE DISABLED'. It goes on to say my choice is incompatible with ...Avahi something, and it is not recommended. If I power off BOINC and power on the Ubuntu Linux VM I unnecessarily created I get the same message. And under Network in both cases it mentions Bridged Adapter, Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Adapter, which is the host Ethernet adapter. And during setup, of all the choices, there was only one that brought up any mention of the physical host adapter.

How can I find out if I have network connectivity. It looks like I do, because of the flashing red and green lights by the 4th icon from the left at the bottom of the screen. But the error message doesn't seem like something that can be ignored.

Problem solved! I was using a masked email address. Apparently it worked in 2010, but not anymore. I entered my real email address, and it worked.

Thanks everybody!

Years ago I participated in atlasathome, so I used the same email address and changed my password at LHC@Home, but BOINC won't accept that combination either as a new user or an existing user. I downloaded BOINC along with VirtualBox. VirtualBox installed first, then it went right into installing BOINC. I set up VirtualBox but it won't accept the password I provided during setup, either. Both VirtualBox and BOINC, inside VirtualBox, are running. I don't know what to do.
