That seems to be it. Everything looks to be working smoothly. Now we can get back to making the most out of that hardware.

"So if you abort all WU's and suspend the project for a couple of days, you'll be golden in a few days."

yes. of course the existing WU had to go. sorry if I wasn't clear.
No roomful of computers here, doing BOINC on my one, single computer I use for everything else as I always have so I can't have it crippled by constant disk access while I try to do other things.
Make no mistake, the LHC is my favorite project and the parts I can sorta understand without the math are very exciting. That monster has already paid for itself and there's more to come.

I guess my stand is if this work isn't important enough to set up the WU properly it's not important enough for me to stress about. I'll just suspend the project for a couple days.

I'm afraid it's a constant problem here. hasn't stopped all evening. I'm a little concerned about how hard it's beating my hdd and if it's going to heat them up too much.

Not buffering to RAM or something. Constant disk access like it's pulling data, crunching, writing results, pulling data etc. Causing wild swings in CPU usage.

Errors here also on most WU today. Interesting side symptom..the LHC WU were kicking the BOINC on and off with what appeared to be CPU in use by other processes cutoffs. Had to readjust my settings to keep it running without shutting down for 30 seconds every...15 seconds..

I don\\\'t care what reasons they give for not making the data public. Any excuse is fine with me as long as the data is kept out of the hands of rogue states like North Korea, Libya and the USA.

Really. Could you have worked any harder or been more clumsy jamming your little political whine into our nonrelated discussion?

My English is very weak...
Am I correct? The Grid is big, ultra-powerful, but its resources are limited, so that grid-computing is going slower as data collecting at LHC...

Perhaps I can help you understand. DESIGNING the instrument is engineering and beneath the dignity of most of the scientists. They couldn\'t care less if monkeys did it as long as specifications they need are met. Therefore we are tolerated.
Working on the DATA from the instrument however is a different matter and we\'re welcome to keep our dirty laymans fingers right off of it. Not to mention the fear of somebody else getting hold of the results and publishing first. I\'d bet large money \'The Grid\' is one of the most secure VPN\'s on the face of the earth and very likely each experiment has it\'s own private encryption key.
Arguments of data quantity are of course misleading..this could all be automated. If anybody trys to tell me porting portions of the code from linux to X86/BOINC format is too much for a project of this magnitude I\'ll laugh in their face. The decision was made to not put the actual data out in public for the above reasons.
If you want to do science, run einstein or milkyway.
If you want to believe there\'s a chance in hell of hearing alien signals from an antenna at the bottom of our atmosphere, run seti.
IF however, you have dreams of doing more than helping design engineers out once in a while, you\'re in the wrong place.

Right now we are working on a Alpha test for the future Large Hadron Collider project so just keep watching and one of these days......

Yes Magic. I\'m connected and have been running either boinc or seti 24/7 for the last 12 years now.
The bad news on the upgrade design crunching is, if people have been doing their jobs, the original design phase should have refined the process enough to have cut the processing needs for the redesign to very little. LOL

What I was taught about Capitalism was that the capitalist risks his own resources in a bid to become successful. Commercial companies using BOINC is equivalent to me asking each of the 2 million BOINC members to send me a dollar each so that I may be of comfortable means. If I were King, commercial use would be banned.
Until there is a plan to either pay me shares of stock in those companies or donate back to the non commercial BOINC projects I am very careful not to give such entities my efforts, as I believe you all should.

why? because there isn\'t any work and there probably never will be. 2 reasons..distributed computing has lost most of it\'s value with the steep drop in price per teraflop of processing and an installation like the LHC has all the computing power it needs because it\'s CHEAP now. These \'gpu super towers\' they\'re selling the BOINC community for under 1000 usd might give you a clue there.
Secondly, the scientists are too worried about being beat to publishing so the data won\'t be sent out for public crunching.
I keep LHC on my list, but I have 3 other very active projects going as well because I don\'t expect to see anything more from here. It\'s done, they don\'t need or want us and never really did. The WU we just got were almost certainly just a periodic test to check how many people are hooked up and how much computing power they represent. Bookkeeping.

I think LHC is an extremely important project and I love helping with it.
In fact, I love the project SO much I keep my cache set at only 4 days so I don't grab too many work units and cause the last 5,000 or 10,000 to take more time to come in than the first 80,000.
It's just foolish and stupid to grab excessive WU and delay the run, especially with BOINC you can always be working on something worthy.
Please people, do not delay the day the physicists make the Big Mistake and collapse the universe back into undifferentiated quantum foam. ;=)

I'm happy. Running 3 projects and I always have work. What irritates me the most about LHC is not the project but some of the users. Those last 2000 work units that take 2 weeks to clear because of the people running 9 projects on their single machine with the cache set to maximum. Shame on you. :-P
