21) Questions and Answers : Getting started : Why don't I get any work units? (Message 19593)
Posted 3 May 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
All 3 posts before this is quite old.

So is this still the case ?
(That there is no work units around for all users to get yet)

Yes. Although the work supply has been much larger the past few months, it is still intermittent. At this time there is no work available.
22) Questions and Answers : Windows : requesting 0 sec. of work...help (Message 19574)

Post:
My computer is "requesting 0 seconds of work" request succeeds at 0 workunits...then "message from server: project encountered internal error: shared memory"

Any ideas whats going on and what I could do to fix this?

If it is requesting 0 seconds then your client does not need any LHC work.

The other is a server problem, there is nothing you can do to fix it.
23) Message boards : Cafe LHC : Merging of computers (Message 19572)
Posted 28 Apr 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
If the computers are not compatible they can not be merged. Once all the tasks associated with the old computer have cleared you should be able to delete it.

The only computers I see in your list that might possibly be compatible (T7600 with XP pro) all contacted the project last on the same day. When that happens there is a good chance the computers will be incompatible due to RPC sequence number conflicts.
24) Message boards : Number crunching : What happens to us when LHC goes live? (Message 19571)
Posted 28 Apr 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
My understanding was that when the LHC goes live there will be a heap of work to be processed something like over 100,000 DVD’s of data collected a year for us to process, is this the case or not?
Cheers
Speedy

There will be tons of data to be processed, however little if any will be coming through the BOINC project according to the last official word I saw. The data size to processing time ratio is likely to be too high for efficient distribution.
25) Questions and Answers : Windows : FPU usage and Graphic question (Message 19500)
Posted 20 Apr 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
The FPU in graphics cards tends to be faster but less precise. So they are not as useful for projects as the raw numbers would make you think. BOINC is making improvements that will make the GPU easier for projects to use, however I doubt this project will ever be suitable for using them.

The graphics show pretty pictures and are unrelated to the task being processed here.
26) Questions and Answers : Sixtrack : Work units listed but not downloaded (Message 19448)
Posted 15 Apr 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
Not on this project, the server is not running a recent enough version of BOINC. The admin is currently unable to get the needed approvals to update the server.

Unbelievable I got 2 wu's! After 2 days of waiting. I thought Seti is the worst lousy project plagued with stoppages but LHC even outmatching and they do not give people official answer.

Hmm it is an international project and they supposed to follow at least minimum respectful moral standard?!?!

Note the sticky thread at the top of this forum. The title is "this project rarely has work", seems a little official to me.

The merge function has a "select all" button. However there is a limited number of hosts it can do at once. I was over that limit several times when we were having the problem.

Not normal, however it is generally not worth worrying about.
30) Questions and Answers : Windows : LHC x64 still runs 32 bit app (Message 19011)
Posted 10 Feb 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
Hmmm, that was the one my system downloaded automatically.

Sorry I meant the project has to manually rename the app and create the 64bit platform. With the later server versions the server automatically sends the 32bit app without intravention from the project if there is not a 64bit app.

32) Questions and Answers : Windows : LHC x64 still runs 32 bit app (Message 18979)

Post:
Running BOINC x64 on Vista x64. The process viewer shows:
sixtrack_4.67_windows_x86_64.exe *32

...in other words it's a 32bit app. Did someone just rename the file or copy the wrong binary over?

It is just renamed so that 64bit systems can get work. I don't think the server here was ever upgraded to send it automatically.
33) Message boards : Number crunching : GPU crunching (Message 18950)

Unfortuantely this project is very poorly suited for running on GPUs. The calculations require very accurate and consistant results. GPUs generally trade this accuracy and consistancy for speed.
34) Questions and Answers : Windows : Detach From Project (Message 18895)
Posted 27 Jan 2008 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
I would suggest setting your resource share very low. That way you will not be doing any LHC work until you can detach.

You must detach using GRID republic, try their support services. If you detach locally the host will just reattach the next time it contacts GRID republic.

The various platforms do not work the same way so different executables are required for each one. The executables generally are downloaded from the projects. In some cases you can compile your own application, but there are only a few projects that allow this.

When you seen "no work for this platform" it normally means that there is work for other platforms.
36) Questions and Answers : Windows : Point rank calculation for a computer. (Message 18680)

Post:
The standard ranking is based on the RAC. Most pages can be sorted by total if you click on the header. Ranking based on RAC helps newer participants get higher on the boards sooner.
37) Message boards : Number crunching : work units?? (Message 18634)
Posted 22 Nov 2007 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
The front page has a status block that tells how many tasks are available and how many are in progress. The project has had a glut of work lately, prior to that work was available about every other month.
38) Questions and Answers : Sixtrack : When my screen savers starts up sixtrack will not display any graphics the screen just goes blank. But BIONC/sixtrack is working. Just no graphics. If I go into BOINC manager and click on show graphics, it will show up. why??? (Message 18483)
Posted 31 Oct 2007 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
A possible source of the problem is that the current version of sixtrack is compiled against a very old version of BOINC. In some cases this causes the graphics not to work properly. It also causes the app to run at a slightly higher priority than it should so host slowdowns can be more noticeable with this project than with other projects.

I would like to see the 4-core max setting removed. Just make is a # per core, period.

Current scheduler code has the CPU limit at 8, so that's yet another problem that is solved by a server upgrade.

>:o

If the server was updated the max_wus_in_progress tag could be used instead of a low quota.
40) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Date indicator to approximate workunit batch (Message 17886)
Posted 14 Sep 2007 by Profile Keck_Komputers
Post:
Unfortunately the project admins rarely know when work is coming. So adding a date indicator is impractical.

Most versions of the BOINC client will work fine if you leave a project with no work at a higher resource share. There are a few versions that do have problems, however I have not noticed any problem with a client later than 5.5.x. The normal problem is that the queue will not fill completely once the LTD gets high enough.
