Vboxwrapper is running on a lower priority than VirtualBox's VBoxSVC.exe.
Therefore on busy systems the communications between those 2 processes is sometimes too slow for the wrapper.
You could lower VBoxSVC.exe priority to 'below normal' before a Vbox-task has started and raise the priority of vboxwrapper to 'below normal' too or even 'normal'.

Thanks for the feedback, Lammert (I was hoping I might hear from you!).

While trying to figure out what -- if anything -- I can do to get more out of this host on LHC, I haven't been running any other projects. On this Windows machine, I'm not sure how identify and change the vboxwrapper and vboxsvc process priorities and I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to do that every time a new task starts (if that's what you mean). I think I'll probably just move this host to another project. I've got 18 other cores running Theory and Atlas tasks without any problem.

I have a host (Win10-64, 4GB RAM, Q6600, BOINC 7.14.2, VBox 5.2.8) that I'm pretty sure used to be able to run at least 2 (if not 3 or 4) Theory tasks at a time in the days before the multi-threaded app. It seems now that it will successfully and consistently complete a Theory task using the MT app when running only one task at a time that is allotted one core (leaving the other three cores mostly idle).

Although it has completed one task at a time using both two and four cores, they ran for only a short period of time (less than 30 minutes). Otherwise, all tasks with (1) more that one core allotted or (2) multiple tasks with a single core allotted, resulted in a computation error with an EXIT_ABORTED_BY_CLIENT code and a line in the stderr output "VM Heartbeat file specified, but missing heartbeat."

Also, although the one task/one core tasks complete, the VM log is full of the "Giving up catch-up attempt" messages.

Is there anything I can do to improve the performance or is this host simply underpowered for today's VM work? It's disappointing that I can't fully utilize it at LHC when there are no SixTrack tasks... :-(

However, even several hours after you wrote your posting, I got the "no subtasks" error many times...

Maybe I'm just lucky or am missing the point, but I have a Theory task that's been running on my 8-core AMD for over 8 hours. If it wasn't getting any jobs, wouldn't it crash, eventually?

What's this all about?

There are several mentions of this kind of error in the Uploads of finished tasks not possible since last night thread. Of particular interest might be Message 33420.

I am still getting "12/25/2017 12:41:47 AM | LHC@home | No tasks are available for SixTrack"

Same here. I think I stopped getting them soon after the time of my last post! :D

...Oh and on the status page it says 1,360,881 SixTracks to send so since I can't get any of them maybe they stopped sending just so this upload before deadline problem doesn't get worse than it is.

I'm getting tasks on my two hosts (both Linux) that are running Sixtrack right now. It hasn't been steady -- I'm getting the "no tasks are available" message, too -- but enough tasks come in to keep the caches relatively full.

I suggest a different color be used for the text for the following links so they are easier to see:

1) "Show names" for tasks on the user tasks pages
2) "Switch View" on the user preferences pages

Some progress, perhaps... I've manged to upload and report six of eight tasks that were stuck uploading. The two that are still there were the first ones to get stuck, I believe.

...im not gonna waste time on something that is so obviously flawed...

It does take a bit of effort to get VM tasks at this project running smoothly, but I don't think that "flawed" is a fair characterization. If you want to participate in this project and don't want to wait for the times that there is Sixtrack work, I recommend you follow Yeti's excellent checklist to see if you can get VM tasks up and running (perhaps starting with Theory which has the lowest RAM requirement and is not multi-core).

...i recently reinstalled my whole OS and apps, and after that LHC worked. it crunched a couple of units, and now i get this "virtualbox not installed" nonsense...so whats going on here?

Sixtrack is the only sub-project at LHC that does not require VirtualBox and there are no Sixtrack tasks available to run right now (see "Tasks by application" on the server status page). Are your preferences set to only accept work for Sixtrack?

For several days now, I've been running the vbox64_mt_mcore app set to use four cores of my six-core, 16GB RAM AMD/Linux host. Of 39 valid results, I'm seeing CPU-time/Run-time efficiencies of 63%-83%, depending on the length of the task.

Is that about what I can expect or should they be doing better than that? Right now, I'm running CPDN tasks on the other two cores and I haven't checked to see if leaving those cores idle makes a difference. Maybe I'm naive, but I wouldn't expect that to make a difference.

I just wanted to bump this up and report that I've been seeing bursts of these same errors recently. Maybe I should be posting this is the LHCb forum, because, for me, they've been occurring primarily, if not exclusively, on LHCb tasks.

Perhaps I should have added that I'm seeing this LHCb behavior on two 16GB RAM Linux hosts that are running two CMS, two Theory, and two LHCb tasks concurrently. No significant issues with CMS or Theory, that I can tell.

I see LHCb jobs running from 18 minutes to 13 hours on an i7-4770. So it appears that it varies a lot.

Yeah, I've had those long runners, too, but not in the last couple of days. Maybe my real question is about the nature or amount of the current LHCb work or how it's distributed.
