1) Message boards : LHC@home Science : LHC@home - Out of Tasks? (Message 20970)

Post:
The tasks are very \\\"bursty\\\". The have them in bunches, so if you only look every few days you could miss them. When you do manage to get one, make it the top priority to get processed - they only credit 60% of the WU distributed, the rest are redundant and get no credits.
That is not true. As long as you report the workunit before the deadline you will get credit.

You will most likely still get your credit once the validator rechecks that workunit.

But those crunching times cannot be correct. I have no idea what is causing it.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Thank you for the work (Message 20893)

Yups, thanks for the work. For me this is one of the best projects to work for because of the obvious value of the work we are doing here.

I have to make a remark tough, and I know I\'m not the first person to complain about this. But I think it\'s a waste of capacity to distribute workunits with an initial replication of 5. The reason is obvious: there are consistently 2 of the 5 computers crunching with no scientific value at all.

You could argue that you get results back faster this way but that argument is invalid because this can be done by creating workunits with a shorter deadline. Shorter deadlines and a replication of maximum 3 certainly are the way to go if there are a lot of workunits to be crunched, you don\'t want 3/5th of your capacity doing useless work if there is still a very big backlog of work that can\'t be started because too many hosts are working on tasks that are of no value at all.

After all the discussions and arguments about this specific topic I still don\'t understand why this very interesting project still uses that very wasteful initial replication of 5.

Some strange things going on. One of my last results first had a \"successful outcome\", one hour later it changed to a \"client error outcome\". I hope this can help.
5) Message boards : Number crunching : All my WUs resulted invalid (Message 20706)

I also have had a significant amount of invalid results with the last batch. The most recent results were validated again though.

There clearly is something going on here because the number of invalid results for each workunit is abnormally high.

Trolls or not. Communication is very important in distributed computing projects which rely on the goodwill of the users.

It can't be too difficult to drop in a message from time to time about the things going on behind the scenes and about the forcasted work. The LHC project leaders promised us a steady stream of work but until now we haven't even got any considerable amount of work at all. The problem is not that there are no work units, the problem is that it is not communicated why and whether or not there will be coming more work in the future.
7) Message boards : LHC@home Science : Is there a risk of the scientists getting impatient? (Message 18434)
Posted 29 Oct 2007 by alpina
Post:
I won't start nagging for immediate quota alterations, I'm sure the LHC people are able to find a good solution themselves when there is substantially more work(I mean for a longer period of time). But I still wanted them to know that there are hosts that are able to do at least 12 times at much work as they are doing now. It would be stupid not to use these resources when LHC will be going full speed.

I'm getting the same message while I have completed my workunit already. I guess the project leaders are trying to give everyone a bit of work instead of a few who get everything. I support this idea completely but it would be nice if the hosts who have allready returned results and have a empty queue could get some new work as well.

That is, to say the least, a sad message. I allways liked your devotion to BOINC and you more than once helped me(and I'm sure many others) out when I couldn't understand what was going on with the projects. On the other hand, I can understand that it has to be frustrating when you put so much effort in a project while you only get a marginal response.

15) Message boards : Number crunching : Why my Granted Credit is just the half GC than other who did same work? (Message 12309)
Posted 23 Jan 2006 by alpina
Post:
I don't really see the problem. You got the same credit as the other hosts that completed your workunits, that's fair isn't it? Or what am I missing?

i claim double, median is the half of it because my client claims more credits in other projects. but they granted me only the half of the median.

http://lhcathome.cern.ch/results.php?hostid=100692

new results arrived first or second to database and they granted me half the credit.

if we calculate median of the values my result doesn't affect this value.
don't matters if the max or min value are infinity or 0.

now i claim better the credit with truxoft callibrated client

http://boinc.truxoft.com/core-cal.htm

Sorry, I misunderstood. Like everyone else allready mentioned, you should take a look at your PC because it's returning invalid results. You might want to take a look at the CPU-temperature. Did you overclok the cpu?

18) Message boards : Number crunching : Download limit? (Message 12142)
Posted 18 Jan 2006 by alpina
Post:
There is a download limit but that is to prevent that corrupted hosts download one workunit after the other without producing any relevant results. That limit is also pretty high so that can't be the cause of your problem.

Is there still a lot of work left on those hosts? Because that could be the reason for not downloading work: it might be in EDF-mode to meet the deadlines.
